the most simple way to apply thermal compound is small blob a bit bigger then the size of a grain of rice in the center of the CPU. never put a pea size blob of thermal paste its way over kill. less=more

What is your current overclock and your core voltage? I mean you said you were overclocking (but then later you said you haven't touched any settings yet).
TJ Max isn't the maximum temp at which the CPU is safe. If that were the case, everyone would leave their CPU's at 5GHz on stock. Tj. Max is only a theory, and really depends on how good of a batch your CPU came from. Some CPU's will burn out before that temperature, and others can resist that much or more. But that is not a definite threshold. Keep temps under 70C no matter what. It's better safe than sorry.

OP: The C2Q don't run super hot, compared to the 1st gen Core iX family but those temps are awfully high. You might want to decrease the OC, try decreasing the voltage first to the lowest voltage that is stable and if the temps continue to stay that high or over 70, lower the clock speed/multiplier.

I use my Q6600 for "everyday use" type of things and it seldom breaks 30C and I can hit a 3.4 overclock and stay in the low 50's with a Megahalems. Temps like yours would concern me also.

The Tj. Max is when the CPU would either throttle itself down or turn itself off. So it is the maximum safe temperature where permanent damage could occur if that temperature were exceeded.

Fortunately, instability usually occurs at lower temperatures because that's one thing that causes instability. Therefore, the reason why I mention the Tj. Max is to make sure people don't panic if their CPU exceeds whatever temperature everyone is telling them to stay under! I'm sick and tired of seeing people get extremely scared when they see their CPU reach like 75°C or something. I've seen too many posts on here from people saying things similar to "Help! My CPU reached 71°C!!! Will it be ok?!", or "OMG IT REACHED 80! DID I FRY IT?!". Sigh.

So, I tell everyone the Tj. Max so that if their temperatures ever exceed like 70°C or whatever everyone is telling them, then they know that they can remain relaxed. Overclocking should be fun, not stressful.

Better yet, set Core Temp or Real Temp to the correct Tj. Max. In Core Temp, this is Options > Adjust offsets. In Real Temp, you click the Settings button and then click "Set TJ Max".

Anyway, what you are referring to is how sensors are designed to only care about high temperatures. Intel did not design these sensors for us to use as thermometers. Instead, they designed them to sense if the temperature reaches the Tj. Max so that the CPU can then either throttle itself down or turn itself off. Therefore, the higher the temperature is, the more accurate it is which means that all we should care about are load temps.

So really, it all revolves around the Tj. Max. Therefore, when we are told to stay away from temperatures that are lower than the Tj. Max, the reason for doing so is to hopefully avoid instability caused by the heat. When instability is caused by heat, it's extra frustrating because now you have to suspect the heat in addition to your settings!

Ultimately though, the main reason why I tell people that the maximum safe temperature is the Tj. Max is so that they can stay relaxed should their core temps exceed 70 or 80 or whatever everyone is telling them. Again, overclocking should be fun.
