Water cooling for Fractal Define R2?

Thread Starter
Hello,

I have a Fractal Design Define R2, and I'm wondering about water cooling, and if it is possible for my case.
I have searched for projects online, but there's not much information.

What I want is to have an internally mounted 240 rad loop for my CPU. I was thinking about buying the RASA 750 RS240 kit, but I'm not sure if I can fit the rad inside my case.

I don't want the rad to be mounted externally because it would destroy the clean minimalist look of the case.

Thank you

you can fit a 240 up top or remove drive bay cages and mount it in the front.

This isn't the define XL. The bay cages are riveted into the case.

Honestly, there isn't much clearance between the top of the case and the motherboard. The RS240 has a thickness of 35mm, plus fans is going to lead to a thickness of 60mm.

I'm just wondering if people have actually installed a fully internal water cooling loop in one of these cases.

BTW, the define r3 is almost exactly the same case.

Drill them out

You're in luck. Bastiaan is doing a full internal water cooling loop in the r2 (look towards the end of the thread). There is also an excellent thread over on xtremesystems by bundy (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...98%85%E2%98%85) It's a great case, I have a black r3

so what if they are riveted? drill them out, even the define xl had the cages riveted.

I do agree that he would need a slim profile radiator up top

Thanks for the links!
Yeah, the case is pretty awesome.
I'll see what I end up with.

How do you drill out rivets? Have you had any experience?

I have an R3 and was considering a Rasa kit as well. One thing to consider though is that the pump/res is a dual 5.25". That would take up all available bays leaving you without an internal optical drive (without any mods of course). Also you could use a slim rad and Scythe slim fans. They are only 12mm thick for a total of 47mm instead of 60mm.

He will probably need slim rads but a swiftech mcr320 will give him the performance of much thicker rads. http://skinneelabs.com/swiftech-mcr-320-qp/ He might even be able to fit a dual thickness rad (like a xspc rx series) if he limits it to a 240 rad, see fd arc midi case images (http://www.fractal-design.com/img_pr...BL_cooling.jpg). The define r2/r3 are essentially the same size as the arc midi, so there is probably a good chance that he could mount a dual 120 if off center.

OP. One thing though to keep in mind. The define r2/r3 was not designed with water cooling in mind. The standard mount holes are incapable of holding a rad due to the weird spacing between the fan mount. You will need to drill your own holes.

Use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the rivet and drill them out. It's pretty simple. Here is a great how-to: http://www.overclock.net/case-mods-g...replacing.html

Huh, if they didn't have water-cooling in mind when they made the case, why did they include 4 holes specifically for water cooling? Maybe they just wanted to add to the 'features' list to make it easier to sell. Who knows?

Yeah, this is one of the problems with the Rasa kit and the fractal r2. Personally, I don't use the ODD anymore, but other people also use the computer, and sometimes they may use CDs/DVDs.
Is there a way to mount the pump + res somewhere other than the 5.25" bays?

All I need is a single loop really. With one 240 rad. If I remove the HDD cage, then maybe I can put the rad in the front. However, with the 5.25" bays taken, where can I put my two HDDs?
