EK X-RES 100 leaking?

Thread Starter
I just installed my first ever custom loop. I am using a Swiftech mcp350 with the aforementioned top. I am using all Bitspower compression fittings, EK Supreme HF Cu/Acetal block, and a Swiftech 240 slim rad.

All of my connections do not seem to be leaking at all. I have been leak testing for the last hour and a half or so. Here's my problem...

The res top seems to be leaking in a strange place. Where the res cylinder meets the rectangular pump top, a small ring of water appears. I don't mean where the clear plastic threads onto the top. I mean at the very base of the cylinder. Here's the kicker though. It only does this when the pump is off. When it is running no water appears.

Can anything be done or do I have a defective top here?

Here is a picture I have before I secured the pump down and filled the loop if anyone is confused at my setup.

EK shipped a lot of their tube res with faulty o-ring. Submit an RMA with photo and they will fix it. That reservoir has had a ton of issues.

Thanks, I might just do that. Is it okay if I run a bead of silicone around the edge or something like that? I would rather not wait on an RMA.

It's just kind of maddening in that the loop itself didn't leak because of me, it is a faulty part.. After all those precautions I took.

Hey your not the only one.

My EK res is leaking from the top, and also found that alot of people are experiencing this when i googled it

it is OK while its running, but when i shut my system down, the back pressure causes water to leak through the lid/tube.

the lid is a 'little' smaller than then the tube, you notice there is water all around the thread where it screws on. If you unscrew it a little, you also notice you can move the lid back and forth..

Its only the seal that's there stopping the water getting out. but it doesn't do a very good job

EK told me the res was designed like this.. the top is meant to be loose to prevent the tube from cracking. They could of made it a perfect fit.... where water cant get through the threads.

Not my pic, but notice how water can seek through the threads... So its only the seal holding the water back.

The bottom of my res is like that aswell, the threads are full of water but it doesn't leak.. While the top one leaks a little.

I still dont understand why the made it lids smaller.. and not a 100% fit. Unless it was poor manufacturing and they just said, it was made like that.

EK is sending me out a new top.

@Jason

That wasn't where my X-Res was leaking though. It was leaking where the pump top meets the black acetal that the tube screws into. It has stopped though mysteriously and I have been running with no problems for months now.

Off topic - why not add your graphics card to the loop? I feel like you have the space to plumb nicely.

I will be transferring this build to a Lian Li A05N as soon as I get it powder coated. Once that is done, I will upgrade to the AMD 7k series and add that to my loop. This GTX570 was actually taken from an SLI rig temporarily.

Edit:
Also, full cover blocks seem like they would not fit behind the PSU in this case. (Another reason to change the case)

I would drain the loop and pull that part and disassemble and inspect closely. Could be an O-ring defect or a milling defect or it could be that it just needs a little hair of Delrin removed that is allowing water to wick past the ring.

I had some mysterious issues with a DDC Dual top/Res combo a while back and found that there were tiny hairs of delrin trapped under the O ring and they acted like wicks that would conduct the fluid out past the O ring. Pulled those off and it was water tight.

Delrin is tough and chewy and if the milling tools are not sharp enough they will leave all sorts of stuff like that behind in the cut path.
