Server Router

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I have a pretty popular TF2 clan with 2, 24/7 servers. I have been told that to increase my server ping, I need a new router that can handle the large taxation. My current upload speeds (4Mbs) should be able to handle 4 dedicated servers, but I am maxed out at 2 servers.

I am currently using a TP Link WR541G.

Can you suggest a CHEAP router that will handle the load better?? Please and thank you!

Here is a screen shot of my current router load. Servers (both on 192.168.10.102) are about half full.

I would suggest building a really low end machine with proper NIC's and using pfsense; we have one running on an old Pentium 4 1.8Ghz machine with 512MB of RAM off a live CD with a floppy config as backup. It can handle much more load than we're putting through it and we have four large file servers, 24 workstations, and a ghosting station hooked up to it.

I mean it'll give you way more control; the other option is to get a router you can flash firmware on it to DD-WRT. But think:

Home Router w/ limited memory

or

PC Router w/ 512-2GB of memory...

So pfsense is a software router?? Would that replace my home router???
Could I use me game server to run pfsense on??

This is interesting.. So you're saying that this "software router" is a virtual router simulated on a system just with a better NIC and soft/firmware? Bump.

build a custom PC with old parts and put PFsense or Untangle on it. It will allow you to build your own router and then buy the NIC for Ethernet

Ok, that's pretty much a copy of what GanjaSMK said. What I want to know, is, can I run the virtual router from my dedicated game server? Or, what router should I get??
