i5 2500k + NH-D14 Temps

Thread Starter
I'm pretty new to this overclocking scene... so bear with me please.

I've overclocked my i5 2500k to 4.5 Ghz @ 1.3v at Turbo...
My concern is that the temps seem to be high in comparison with other people's systems with the same configuration. I get around 65C and sometimes it even jumps to 72C at the most while I test with Prime95's blend test. Am I doing something wrong to get these high temperatures?

How's your ventilation? What kind of case are you using and what other fans are you using in the case? Are you using the default fans on the NH-D14?

Yes, that does seem very high for 4.5GHz. Did you tighten down the screws fully? Did you use thermal paste? Are both fans running?

Fractal R3 Case and I'm using the default fans. I'm using the 2 fans included with the case... one in the front and one in the back.

Yea I tightened them and I used the thermal paste... put a dot in the middle of the CPU around 4-5mm in diameter as the instructions said. Both fans are running at around 1300 RPM.

Could be my hot room because it's around 25C.

25C is pretty normal for a room temp. I suggest you reapply the thermal goop. Could have not spread well. Reapply and be sure to wiggle the HSF so that it gets a head-start in spreading out. Don't remove the pressure as that will develop air bubbles between the goop and heatsink.

Which direction are the fans facing? Horizontal or vertical? They should be horizontal.

Okay I will try reapplying the paste. And yes the fans are horizontally positioned. Thanks you all for the fast help BTW

pogi - 4.5GHz at 1.3v gets you 65c in a Fractal case with stock fans. That's actually pretty good. Those Fractal cases need plenty of ventilation - you need more than stock. Otherwise, you're fine.

It still doesn't sound right. I was clocking a 4.6Ghz 2600K with a Hyper 212+ (mediocre cooler at best), and was hitting a max of around 74C. An NH-D14 will do a lot better than that.

It will on prior gen chips. I'm seeing reports of fairly mediocre results on i7 2500's and 2600's. Jury's still out for this cooler and that family of chips.

Yeah, I just read that it does take a lot of fans to cool using this case. I'll buy another fan for the front and possibly one for the top.
