New build for friend shut off and won't power on after 30 seconds into DVD drive boot

Sorry to be a bother!
Here's the build I have for my friend.

i7-2600k
Asus P8P67 Pro (open box from Newegg)
Corsair 750AX
G.Skill ECO (2x4gb) 1600mhz
MSI 560Ti Twin Frozr
WD1TB Caviar Blue
CM212 Hyper+

At first everything was running fine. It boot into BIOS setup, then I booted into Windows Setup from the disc drive and stepped out of the room for a moment. Came back, it was off and now won't power on. Popped out the battery, waited a bit, then popped it back in and it was working as normal... until the same situation bit.

While I was looking at the insides, I noticed the PSU fan wasn't running and the PSU felt hot in one of the corners after the spontaneous poweroff. Could this be the culprit? I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Easiest way to trouble shoot is to get a known working unit and see if it'll boot with the other psu

+ rep for quick reply. I did that a few minutes ago actually, and it still didn't power on. Since resetting the CMOS by battery appeared to have fix things temporarily, is it possible that the MOBO is DOA?

Only attach the essentials and see if it'll go into bios

CPU, GPU, memory, PSU, KB, Mouse

NO drives or peripherals

Sounds like your open box mb may be shot

Try this. Do the same temporary fix with the battery that you did before. Once you put the battery back in and power up for the first time, go into the bios and look for something along the lines of "load optimized defaults". If you find this, select this and hit yes. Then save and exit, and see if it boots up after that. That what is sometimes required for my motherboard or else it won't post after a clear CMOS or bios flash. I'd say its worth a shot.

If this problem persists, I would probably guess it's the motherboard causing your problems. That's the risk in getting open-box.

Thanks to the both of you, +rep. I had him pick up a new ASUS P8Z68 board from Fry's. Installed it, everything ran without a hitch... well until we found out that the Front USB ports began to go up in smoke on his new Antec Darkfleet, got my finger burned trying to figure out what the burning smell was. Guess he's not going to have Front USBs haha.

In other words, Open Box board was shot indeed. Do you think they'll take back an RMA?

Products that state "This item is covered by Newegg.com's Refund Only 30-Day Return Policy", or items labeled as “Non-Replaceable” (or similar labeling) must be returned to Newegg within 30 days of the invoice date for this policy to apply. Products covered by this return policy may only be returned for a refund. “Return” constitutes receipt of the product by Newegg, and not the mere issuance of an RMA.

This is our Detailed Open Box Item Return Policy. Newegg often sells items that are listed as "open-box." Such items can only be returned within 30 days of the applicable invoice date. “Return” constitutes receipt of the product by Newegg, and not the mere issuance of an RMA. Newegg cannot provide replacement service for these items, as their stock is limited. The entire risk as to the quality and performance of these items is with the buyer. These items have been tested for functionality, but may have superficial physical defects including, but not limited to, scratches, dings or dents. Should these items exhibit a functional defect following their purchase, the buyer (not the manufacturer, distributor, or Newegg) assumes the entire cost of all necessary servicing or repairs, unless otherwise required by law. These items are not covered by any 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

If you purchase an Open-Box product Newegg guarantees only that you will receive the product itself; accessories MAY OR MAY NOT BE INCLUDED with Open-Box products.
