Is this is a good buy? $25!!! Look!

Hello Everyone!

I have an IBM eserver model 8676-11x for sale.

I purchased this machine to learn how servers work, but I think I may be in way over my head.

This server has:

Two 2.8GHZ Intel Xeon Processors
2.5 GB of PC 2100 ECC RAM
a 75 GB 10,000 RPM Hard Drive

I'm sure someone who has more knowledge would appreciate having this, They are going for $150+ online, and if parted out it can go for well over that.
I just dont have the time or knowledge to mess with this thing anymore, or honestly the space to store it.

^ Thats a ad on Craigslist, i already called the guy, but i know nothing about servers, also comes with a 9400GT video card.

$25? I'd question why he would be selling it for $25 when they are supposedly going for $150 online But if it's legit then I honestly don't see how you could be losing any money, the 9400 alone is probably valued at around 25.

He seemed like one of those cool older pc guys. Around 35 id guess. Said he only paid $25 for it, and it works. I asked him why didnt he just sell it on Ebay for more and he said "Well i dont have a Ebay account and im sure some one could use it and just want what i paid for it back".

What are these things good for? Could i install Windows MCE or Windows 7 64 on it?

I would jump on that asap. You could easily get your money back on it if you part it out. Just open it up first to make sure its all there.

Depends on what you need and what you want.
You could drop your preferred flavor of linux on it and use it as a folding server, you could get new mobos for the CPUs and make an AD / file / whatever server (or keep it as is, get some better / more RAM and virtualize), overkill proxy / HW firewall, etc.

Anything you could want, really.

I know nothing of Linux or anything else you said there.

Might just tinker with it and re-sell it for like $75.

i know for a fact those CPU's are 32-bit only... and still probably not even hyper-threaded... basically a 10 year old machine (ibm was making these "entry level" servers in 2004)

If you want to get into servers, I jump on it and get to know linux. The best way is to tinker with it and find out for yourself how powerful it can be in the server realm.

Though I do admit, it can be frustrating sometimes when you're crunching commands line by line and it's not going how you want it to, but when you figure it out and get it sailing, it's a great feeling of accomplishment.

Hell, you don't even have to CLI it, you could run it from a desktop like you would a Windows server.
