Newbie fan question

Thread Starter
Hi, I've only built one system in the past and my motherboard only had 1 chassis fan connector, so I don't want to overlook any potential problems.

On the CoolerMaster HAF X case it has 4 fans I believe. The motherboard I have chosen is the ASUS P8P67 PRO, apparently it only has 2 chassis fan connectors and 1 power fan connector.
Basically, will I need a fan controller or a splitter of sorts to be able to connect all the HAF X fans?
Thanks

if the fans have molex connectors they dont need to be plugged into the mobo

or you can get a few connectors like these to plug them in to the psu

Most case fans will have a normal 4-pin molex connector and/or the adapter from the small 3/4 pin motherboard to the 4-pin molex. The molex is the ones used for older IDE drives, etc in case you didn't know. So in other words, as long as you get the right kind of fans, you shouldn't have a problem. And even if you didn't, you can buy the adapters or even make them yourself if you are good with splicing.(is what I done)

You have plenty of options for getting around the problem. Sure you could get a fan controller, which would probably be the quickest and easiest solution but also the most expensive. You could also grab molex extensions and connect the fans directly to the PSU or if you feel like modding and cutting up some cables, you could join the wires of two fans and have them plug into a single power connector. I like the cutting option but since the fans are new and whatnot I probably would recommend just grabbing a cheap fan controller. You could pick one up for about ~$15 on the egg.

So most people just connect them to the PSU? I was just wondering because I figured connecting to the PSU it would mean they always run at 100% and having them run low as possible at idle would be optimal as my bed is pretty close.

Putting that into consideration, should I just opt for a cheap fan controller such as a Scythe Kaze Q?

Connecting it to the psu would have it running at full speed unless the fan has a dedicated fan controller, which i'm pretty sure the fans in the haf x don't have. I'd just go ahead and pick up a fan controller, if you have the funds for it.

Yeah well the Kaze Q is only $20 AUD, I'll go with that just for the peace of mind. Thanks

you can hook it to the 5v line, if you are willing to mod the connector or solder the wires

then it will always run at a lower rpm/cfm/noise levels

Don't the HAF X fans have Molex connectors? Whenever you get a case - especially an excellent high end case like the HAF X - you should first live with the stock fans before trying anything new or additional. And stock case fans always come with connectors. And all the connectors I've ever seen for stock case fans are Molex, which you connect directly to the PSU.

Enjoy your new rig!
