GTX280 SLI works.. and then doesn't. and then works again!

^ previous post about my brash attempt at getting SLI to work.. caused by me cutting corners and stuff. I hope that had nothing to do with the problems I'm having now.

I got my two GTX280's working, albeit one was in an x16 and the other was in an x8 slot. I wanted to max out performance so I swapped one card to the bottom x16 slot (used a 3 way connector borrowed from my roommate). Worked fine.. however the bottom card ran really warm.. I got scared and moved the bottom card to the middle x16 slot. All of a sudden that card stops responding. Not recognized in device manager. I uninstalled the nVidia drivers once more and then 275.xxx (the latest ones) wouldn't install. I downloaded 270.xxx (previous driver update I believe) and it worked.. for a couple days. I turned off my computer one night and the next day lo and behold the second card isn't responding.

After more swapping cards and uninstalling and reinstalling drivers (to which it was the same effect) I got it to work completely in the original format I had.. x16/x8. I hibernated my computer (I noticed it won't automatically go to sleep as I had it do before..) for an hour or so and when I turned it back on, the main card (x16, the one that has been working this whole time) stops responding.. no video.. nothing. So as of now I'm running my monitors off my 2nd card in the x8 slot. Both lights on the cards are green, they're both turned on and running, I've tried them separately and installed drivers on them separately and yet hibernating my computer causes them to not work? I don't get it. I haven't opened my case for a few days now for fear of breaking something. I'd go run the top/bottom x16 slots again but of course nobody can find the 3-way SLI connector now!

What am I doing wrong here that I need to rectify? I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that I have a new (used) dead card.. since it works by itself!

I would start off using the 258 or 266 drivers. The 266's are a bit better but I have found the 258's more stable for me.Do a safe mode boot use CC cleaner to wipe out the nvidia drivers and reboot again and load the 258's.Make sure you are using the correct drivers for your Win7 x64.Win7 might try to load the drivers once you do a CClean of the old drivers thats ok let it then run the Nvidia drivers.

Sounds like a good plan. I have some time today that I'm going to use to mess with it and I'll see what I can accomplish.
