Graphics Card for HTPC

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,
Thanks for any help.

I am putting together specs for an HTPC build. It will be in an ATX case, and can be as noisy as it likes as it will be hidden away in a back room. The last thing I need to figure out is what graphics card to go for.

It just needs to be able to run the media center software (probably Media Portal), so display movies and TV at high-res. It won't have to deal with games or anything like that. So I'm not sure what is appropriate and what is overkill, an $80 budget would be good.

Also, I'd like to have optical audio out, can anyone recommend a good card for that?

Thanks!
Matt

I'd just stick an nvidia GT440 in there. It'll handle anything you have to throw at it

Thanks for the advice!

?
It is however a bit more than my suggested budget-

Are you going to be running 3D? SB can run HD fine on integrated graphics, and an ATI 4200 would do just the same. You don't need to shell out for a card if it's not going to be used for gaming...something like a 5450 would be good enough.

You said $80. I assume this is USD

That will do the job.

I did mean 80 USD yeah! But I'm actually buying in GBP, and couldn't find something that good value in the UK- sorry.
Thanks a lot for the help jellis142.

Any thoughts on the soundcard question? The main thing is it needs to output to Optical Audio.
Cheers-

Don't quote me, or take my statement to be 100% fact, but at stock settings, an ATI 4200 played Blu-Ray fine, and hardware acceleration worked as well. 40SP's will do the trick, and you can get 80SP's with a 5450, which is more then enough.

Of course, more isn't always a bad thing. A GT 430 would be a brilliant HTPC card, if it's in your price range. I guess it really depends on what's available in your area

For my TV I need to do composite video out (YCbCr).
Does anyone know of a graphics card which could do this?
Cheers,

I'd like to recommend you 5770SL or 5750SL of GIGABYTE, they both have very very huge fins so that they can avoid the units run up to the over-heated temperature. I've used a 5770SL and felt so satisfied with it.
