Help on first build. I5/I7 processor. $600>

I am looking to build my first computer. I am looking to use an I5 or I7 processor if possible. I am limited on cash, about $600, give or take a little bit. Also, My parents have agreed to pay for half of the most expensive part of the build. I am looking to use the computer for gaming and plan on upgrading it later on when I have to money.

For $600 I don't think you'll get a great i5 system, however, you could get a very nice AMD system, maybe a PII x4.

Would you be happy with AMD?

EDIT

OK this is what i've come up with

HAF 912

Samsung F3 1TB

GIGABYTE GA-870A-USB3

XFX 6870

Corsair TX650V2 PSU

GSkill Ripjaw X 4GB kit

AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE

That comes in at $654 and it'll be a nice starter rig. This is without a screen however.

I wouldn't mind
Like I said, this is my first major build, so i'm still learning.

If you wanted something with a screen, then we'll need to drop your processor to an athlon x4 and probably get a cheaper GPU, but if you do that then you might struggle with some games.

How much money would you say I would need for a I5 computer?
for something that's actually worth while around $800 at least, $900 would be a more realistic amount since we could do a better GPU as well. There's no point having all the Processor horsepower without having a GPU to couple it with

It's just the components? You'll still need to assemble it.
