Beyer Dynamic DT 990 or grado 325is

Looking at getting either the Beyer dynamic DT 990's or grado 325is.

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Beyer-Dynamic-Premium-600-Headphones/dp/B0024NK34O/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1311531421&sr=8-4"]Amazon.com: Beyer Dynamic DT 990 Premium 600 OHM Headphones: Electronics[/ame]

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Grado-Prestige-Series-SR325is-Headphones/dp/B000J1N3HW/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1311531521&sr=1-1"]Amazon.com: Grado Prestige Series SR325is Headphones: Electronics[/ame]

Both are about $300 and I want something with some bass and rock / metal music. So far I am leaning toward the Beyer dynamic. I am thinking about heading to a guitar center to try and test out some headphones but these dont look to be in stock.

You can find the Beyer Dynamic DT990s 600ohm for less than $200 used and maybe less than $150 for the 250ohm version.

You probably won't be able to use the 600ohm version well unless you have a really nice amp.

the grado 225i's? I own the 225i's and when I compared them with the 325i's the difference I felt wasnt worth 100$. I do a lot of listening as I'm a music student. If I had 300$ I would get a headphone amp and the 225i's or something like the sennheiser 598's. The sennheisers are suuuuper comfortable and have a depth,warmth and bass that are very deep that I would really like for rock. I'm considering purchasing a pair because it's a joy to wear them and hear them in a different way than the grados. The grados which I've had for close to 4 years are suuuper clear and you can hear every instrument very well. awesome in their own way but the earpads are nowhere near as comfortable as the sennheisers. Also the grados earpads keep coming off.boo.

Do yourself a favor and spend an extra $50 for Sennheiser HD650s. I much prefer them to any Beyers and Grados. The Grados will have a slightly exaggerated bass, but I find they are severely uncomfortable. The only Grados I found to be comfortable are the GS1000i, but they are $1000+.

I personally own and use the Grado 325is, they don't have exaggerated bass, in fact the don't have much. They shine in the mids and are perfect for rock genres (what i listen to). I haven't tried the Bayer DT 990's so I can't speak on how they compare. But I can say the Grados are fantastic after burn in but they are on the uncomfortable side with the stock earpads.

The 650's sound nice with rock music, but with metal...im not sure. Its not as aggressive as grados.

Skip the DT990s and get a pair of DT880s. IMHO

I have a pair of semi vintage SR325 and a pair of HD580. The Senns get more use from me, dt880s are too similar to justify owning them as well, but pair them with a good source and tube amp and you'll really like them.
