Foldathon - new to FAH and syked to fold

Thread Starter
Hello OCN folders!

I decided last week to start folding and of course I'm hooked... I'm signed up for the foldathon and fold under wirefox. My first week down and I folded about ~72k total running 24/7-ish. on v7. ....I'm not sure if it includes bonuses or not...

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.c...hp?s=&u=563435

I'm running v7 with my sig rig

i920 @4.0 HT on and 5970 900/1200

the first few days I had a lot of bsods and issues until I found my clocking/volt sweet spot for the cpu.

I'm running v7 smp w/ bigadv and 2x gpus w/ advanced

I think if I keep running 24/7 I can get about 20k or so ... so long as my system doesn't tweak out.

My CPU is running stable and anywhere from high 60s to mid to high 70s depending on wu.

Questions:

questions on my gpus... my 5970 is giving me random fahcore errors see below. I've always had the dreaded 2D issue with my 5970 and I think it's causing issues while folding - I've tried everything increase ICH, overclocked a 2d profile in afterburner etc etc... (haven't flashed bios as I've never done so for a gpu)

any recommendations?... I'm wondering if other are having this issue and what the causes may have been...

Question on gpu folding on v7:
Under expert tab I see the base credits 1835 and estimated PPD 7-8k ... when I check extreme overclock I only show the base credits. why is there such a discrepancy - or is estimated just buggy?

Does it make sense to even fold cpu's on v7? I only see 600-700 for typically 12 hr+ folds? should I set up a 6.34 or not fold my cpu. If I don't fold the cpu will my gpu's fold faster having a full cpu core to fold with?

I'll like not fold the next couple days as I'm going through gaming withdrawl...but looking forward to the foldathon

Insane props/rep to Zodac and others who have pulled together amazing how to's

First thing to do is ditch V7 and down load gpu tracker v2.It will allow you to dedicate one of the cores to the gpu's.Thats a big problem folding on ATI/AMD cards. They need a good bit of cpu to fold with.As your points on EOC.Your ppd is the point per day not points at every update. You will get the base points of 1835 if you complete the WU in time.As for the cpu.Get gpu tracker loaded and running and once you complete 10 wu's with a pass key then you can start bigadv folding and get some big point.

Make sure you don't ditch v7 for the GPUs. V7 is the only way t get _16 WU for them with roughly double the PPD compared to old _11.

I think if you ditch the GPU's you should get much more than 20K on the i7 @ 4.2 Jigglehertz doing a bigadv

Thanks for the speedy responses. So anyone have any more input? sounds like 3 different suggestions so wondering which ...

So i have three option from the response so far

-ducrider

thanks for the estimated ppd and base credit explanation (makes sense +1 rep)
you suggested I dump v7 for running GPUs and run gpu tracker v2 adjust core (if I do this, will I get bigadv since I'll technically only be running 7 or 6 cores? as I thought I read that you need to run all 8) - would you suggest I run gputv2 and then the cpu with v7 or set up a 6.34 client? (have not set up a 6.34 client)

would the pass key I used so far in V7 transfer the wu to gputv2?

if I run gputv2 I would need to run 6.34 client for cpu or can I run v7?

-arvidab
Don't dump v7 since it's the only way to get _16 advanced wu's (I can typically get them done in about 3-4 hrs depending on the wu so ~16-17k 24/7)
`
-omega17

Don't run GPU's and run my i920 only... and I'll get ~20k (is that per wu or day) is that running cpu in v7 or 6.34?

I just got a wu 6068 on v7 (Is it a bidadv) 10hrs, TPF 6m 18 sec credit, est ppd not shown (I think I read this is a sever side update to v7 but they are counted on the backend)

anyone else have input I'm just not sure which one to try...

time is credit

thanks

A bigadv unit takes 2 to 4 days to complete depending on you cpu and cpu load.I like gputracker cause It will set everything up with out a lot of work. You can not as of my last reading up of V7 be able to use a numbered amount of cores to fold the cpu on.Gpu tracker will do that.My suggestions are a option.Maybe you can use gputracker for the cpu set up and V7 for the gpu's.

The stork dropped of a bigadv on my door step last night 6900 (23,11,14). 7183 total credit or 1987 a day .... I'm crunching away on it and it should hatch during the foldathon.

I actually just left v7 client running. I went through 11 wu yesterday and about 24k points. (no bigadv's and all _16's for my gpu)

I think that seems okay for my set up?

Unless omega17's suggestion of just running my cpu only will net me 20k per wu or 20k ppd? since my ati cards are monopolizing my cpu a bit.

To sum up, if you're using your GPUs, then v7 is necessary. The older WUs give half the PPD.

However, since each GPU takes one core of the SMP client, you might find you get better PPD using all 8 cores for -bigadv, and no GPU (the power consumption would certainly be lower), though you wouldn't get consisnent points during the day; only one big drop from the -bigadv every 2/3 days.

Similarly, 7 cores for SMP and one GPU might get better PPD than either of the other options. Only way to find out is to try out each set up and see which works for you.

Good luck in your first Foldathon too.

so it sounds like I have some testing to do.

question -

You mentioned each gpu takes a cpu core... so i assume since the 5970 has two gpus that two cpu cores are being used? Or are all cores being shared to help run the card

in v7 if I stop folding one or both of my gpus while I have a bigadv running.... Will the time for completion of the bigadv decrease since it now has full control of all cpus/threads? or would I have to wait until a new wu comes in?

thanks - wirefox

Correct; one core per GPU, so two for the 5970.

And yes; once the GPUs clients are off, the SMP client will speed up. However, you'd need to change the number of cores too, and in v7, that would lead to you resetting the WU.

A more flexible option might be to use the v6.34 SMP client:
http://www.overclock.net/folding-hom...mp-client.html

You can manually set the number of cores (by changing the "-smp" flag to "-smp 6" or "-smp 7"), and it won't reset your WU.
