Don't know what the difference between the two boards is

Commenting on future products is impossible. But, if you were to talk current generation 6970 crossfire, x8/x8 vs x16/x16 is a minimal loss in performance- maybe only a few percentage points but definitely not noticeable.

The boards are the same except I believe one had a DVI out for the onboard graphics and supports the Inel Sync technology for video conversions.
