What to do now....

Thread Starter
I am installing ubuntu 11.04 as I type this. I finally have a spare computer lying around and want to try and familiarize my self with the linux world. I know there are a lot of things to do on it but I was wondering if you guys could maybe throw me some ideas on thingsi should try to mess with or any tips for after a fresh in stall.

Thanks in advance.

Also noticed it runs extremely slow. My laptaop has a 1.8 c2d, 2gigs or ram and a Nvidia 9400m.

Once it is installed you need to get the drivers for your graphics installed... that system is plenty fast enough to have a very good experience with 11.04 (if you where trying out the Live-CD it is considerably slower than an installed distro)...

If you are looking for things to do... checkout the software center... more than enough applications to keep you busy

If you want to learn a chunk about Linux, throw yourself in the deep end and compile your own kernel. You'll need to read up on it on the web, and it might not all make sense, but Google around and post in here, and you'll find yourself learning without realising it

So i got my graphics drivers installed and everything is working properly just really slow. 5-10 seconds for firefox to open. 2-3 seconds after hitting power for the menu to come up.

I installed from a usb stick and maybe i messed something up so im going to download and burn to a dvd.

I don't think im ready to compile my own kernal yet lol, I don't even know any of the basic commands. I did get wow installed on it and it runs terribly. Hopefully a new install fixes my performance issues on the desktop, i dont care about wow that was more for fun.

i've got ubuntu 11.04 on a 1.7 ghz single core Pentium-m with 512 mb of ram, and a integrated intel graphics, it is running gnome classic, but it runs just fine...not sure what your problems could be.

are you sure intel speedstep is on? is it throttling down to like 700mhz? cause when mine does that, any of the OS's i have installed on it, crap out.

i also have it installed on a laptop similar to the one you have it installed on, the only problem i have with it at times, is the battery meter not always being accurate.

let us know how it turns out.

The way to learn Linux is to try to do everything you have been doing, but now not on Win/Mac. When you find something you want to do, and don't know how, you figure it out... starting with a a quick Google search (not Bing). In no time you start feeling like a geek and loving it.

When in doubt, ask here. Linux is mucho friendly.

I just put 11.04 on my old Dell laptop (1.86 Pentium M Centrino 1.5GB of DDR2 553 RAM, NVIDIA 9300) and it is PLENTY fast. System boots in less than 2 minutes and I am running the full Unity desktop with Compiz installed and extra desktop effects installed. I used a persistence enabled flash drive to install it. There must have been something gone wrong in install or you have an unrelated hardware issue.

I agree with StupidMonkey, I have been playing with Ubuntu for about a year now on and off. I have been reading some books as well but just trying to DO things I want and searching and asking for help have been responsible for much of my learned knowledge.

It's an awesome OS, just realize you do have to learn some things unlike Windows, but once you do, the rewards are far above what you can do with Windows.

It might be stating the obvious to mention that Windows has a learning curve as well but almost everybody starts with Windows and takes those year fro granted by the time they even become aware of Linux.

For the record without a single exception I don't know anyone (especially with an nVidia card) that doesn't get superior performance with Linux over Windows, often even with the added layer of Wine. I'm an avid WoW player and one example of many of it's superior performance is that on the same box and same isp I get an average of 106 ms latency on Win7 Ult 64 and around 54 ms in Linux with wine. It's worth the effort to figure it out.
