Depends. If it's white, and looks like it can seal the cracks of a sink, then no. Those are the worst, and often are marginally better than no TIM. If it is gray or silver, and the container says cohesive/conductive, then you are golden. The higher-end TIMs barely make a difference compared to widely used TIM like Artic Silver 5 and MX-2,3, and 4.

What are your temps now? As i said if your happy with the temps your getting and are withing the spec maybe its not worth it. If your trying to squeeze every bit of performance out of that chip then yea. Have a look at the highest performing ones and try them out and try different methods when applying the thermal paste.

which shin-etsu exactly? I used G751 and got very good temps.

I tested that one also, didn't get good results compared to ICdiamond and the X23-7782D. I think it was a total of 5 TIMS I tested (mx2, mx3 ic7 G751 and X23-7782D), the G751 came third just behind ICdiamond and the Shin etsu X23-7782D. Obviously the testing conditions were not 100% accurate but it was good enough testing for myself lol I persoanlly think, from my own testing, that the X23-7782d is one of the best TIMS around thumb.gif

Just a note you might not get the same results as I did.

the spreading method doesn't work that well. I've always used that small pea or big rice sized drop on the middle of cpu. It's usually the best and never needs to be re-seated. I've tried both countless times.

It's something different with mine, in that case. Probably just the internal diode on the one core being off. It evens up past 50 or 55C.
