Load = Voltage Drop?

So here's an interesting problem: The more I stress my CPU, the lower the voltage gets. I've set my voltage to 1.35v in order to try and get a stable 4.8ghz OC, but the strange thing is, when I bench it, CPUz reports LOWER voltages, ONLY when the bench is running.

For example, with nothing other than Firefox open, the voltage is 1.352v. If I start IntelBurnTest, the voltage will drop to 1.336, and sometimes as low as 1.328v. Once it sits in the area of 1.328 for very long, the system crashes. However, if I hit "stop", the voltage will return to 1.352v.

My question of course is "Why is this happening" and "what can I do about it".


For reference, at 4.74ghz, the system is 100% stable at 1.344v. I've done hours of rendering, hours of burntest and hours of prime - its solid as a rock.

It's called Vdroop. It's normal and happens to some degree on everything.

I wouldn't expect that on a 16-phase board, but you can definitely do something about it.

Enable "Load line calibration" in the bios, start off with the lowest settings. LLC will raise the voltage under load to help counter the vdroop you're experiencing.

Cool, but I think it made it worse? I was getting bsods, so I decided to revert back to my 4.74ghz OC. However, even with BIOS saying that my voltage is 1.35v, CPUz is reporting 1.336 or 1.328 (it fluctuates). What is going on?

you get a vdrop from bios coming into windows, that's normal,

then when you load the processor you get a vdroop, thats normal,

to combat it enable LLC as has already been suggested (high or very high works best to give a stable voltage under all conditions),

it fluctuates because of the load placed on the processor, you've basically answered your own question

vdroop is put in place by intel because when the cpu is loaded from unloaded it experiences a voltage spike which could be enough to damage the cpu. So to keep things simple the set value is the maximum your cpu will get during that peak, not the amount it will run with when loaded for a period of time.

There may be bios options for counteracting it, or there may be pencil mods or you could get a soldering iron out and sort it but I don't recommend the last two.

I've had better experience/stability with Load Line Calibration off. It is stable at idle, but not under load, meaning you need to give it more voltage. With Load Line Calibration on, it changes how some things are supposed to be, and you may experience the opposite... stability under load but flakiness at idle and light situations. I'd just up the voltage a few notches and call it a day. It sounds like you're almost stable but not quite.

This is what I meant with "the way things should be". When you enable Load Line Calibration, you lessen vdroop, but then your spikes may go above what you set.

Essentially, it's a tradeoff. If you understand and compensate for vdrop and vdroop, I'd just leave it off.

Wow, I never heard that before? Intel actually designed Vdroop into there cpu's?

I thought AMD cpu's had Vdroop as well?

Ok, I think the problem might not be VDroop - the voltage wont even go over 1.336v anymore (its 1.35v in bios), and even then, it still drops with llc at 'high'. Its stable enough for gaming, but running any sort of actual benchmark just crashes it with a bsod 101 for not enough voltage, because the voltage still drops to 1.328v and such.

I've updated the bios to 1850, and that didnt fix it either (also, where does the "screenshot" button save to?)

Going from LLC off to LLC on changes alot of the rules. That's why I said, unless it's universally better on with Sandy Bridge or something, you're probably better off leaving it off and just giving it a tad more voltage and calling it a day. It's unstable and needs a little more. Give it three more notches and try again.

In windows itself, do you, by any chance have your power profile set to "Balanced" or "Power Saving"???

If you do, set it to "Performance"
