New i5-2500k Build! (First Build)

Thread Starter
This is my first build in about 10 years, I've just been dealing with laptops for that long now. Finally wanted to get back in and do a little bit of gaming so I'm putting together this build. My budget was 1-2k closer to 1 the better.

Parts list-
CPU: i5-2500k
Mobo: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO Z68
PSU: Corsair HX 650
GPU: EVGA 570 Superclocked
RAM: Corsair 2x4GB Vengeance 1600
CPU Cooler: Zalman 9900 MAX Blue
HDD: WD Caviar Black 750GB 6.0 SataIII
Case: Corsair 650D
Monitor: ASUS 23in LED 1080
Windows 7 Home Premium OEM

I play HON, Starcraft 2, waiting for BF3!

All these parts should arrive tomorrow I'm super excited to get my hands on everything. Any tips suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I have not built a PC in too long. Anything I need to know about putting it together tips tricks etc!

Thanks!

Sata III on that HDD is probably a waste of money because Sata II won't bottleneck your read/writes with that HDD. Maybe go with a Samsung F3? Also, If you plan to SLI in the future, maybe go with a 750 watt PSU for more headroom.

EDIT: I don't really have experience with that CPU cooler, but maybe check out the Thermalright Silver Arrow?

Try to get an SSD. It would do lots for the experience in Windows.

Yep, I did some shopping around when I was finalizing my build, a 640gb Sata II was 64.99 on newegg and a 750gb sata III was 64.99 both caviar blacks. Of course I went with more GB, and faster connections. I figured 650 for now and ill grab a AX 850 when I do plan on SLI. Currently i rather have the extra 80 bucks for a cheapo ssd for the z68 smart response thing

Only advice is take your time and make sure you have all the connections in place, make sure ram are fully inserted in their slots, on that note, the manual suggests that you should use the coloured RAM slots first (Blue Slots - A2+B2). Providing that you have all the connections in place give it a go and switch it on.

The very first thing that people tend to do is the switch it on go into BIOS see the temps and freak out, as long as you are 100% sure that you have followed the manual for the cooler and made sure that you have attached the cooler as best as you can then you have nothing to worry about in terms of temps. The bios may show 50c+ but it's usually inaccurate and the fact that the CPU is not really idling at BIOS it is therefore producing a little heat.

At that point you can go ahead and install windows, I can say for sure that the temps in windows would be much lower compared to that of the BIOS. I recommend either Realtemp or coretemp for that.

Let us know how you get on with the overclocking and if you need any further help .

EDIT: By the way welcome to OCN

Thanks!

Ahhh too late on the Silverarrow, I looked around for a while i didn't want a Noctra d14 because I really couldn't stand the colors of that thing. This one looked cool and had good reviews so I choose it. SSD wise I'm looking for one that won't break the bank at the point and have some decent storage .

Edit: Question! mount cpu cooler left to right or up and down for maximum cooling/airflow?

I'd say intake from right and exhaust to the left to prevent intaking hot air from the GPU

EDIT: ^assuming you keep both stock exhaust fans as exhaust

yep will both be exhaust. Ok! thanks
