As nice as it is to have a 5.0Ghz OC, remember that the SB chips we have now are "mainstream", though high-end. They are not in any way enthusiast chips. 2 years ago, it was a headache to OC mainstream chips to such a level.... The fact that we're so easily hitting 4.5Ghz++ is in itself, a miracle.

BSOD 124s means it needs more vCore. I think the problem most people have with this right now is the fact that you are already exceeding Intel's spec for max voltage. Which means your chip most likely is degrading as we speak.
Maybe you are missing the point everyone is trying to make here:
You could add more voltage to make the chip "stable"(by your definition) @ 5Ghz. However, it is degrading.
In a few days or weeks, you will begin to BSOD again. Which will either mean more vcore or lower your overclock. This cycle will keep going on until you find yourself with either a dead chip or needing 1.4v+ just to get to 3.7Ghz.

It is great that you have a backup 2500K, but dude, we are not asking you to lower the overclock and slowly work your way up because we feel like being pushy. It is because no one wants you to waste a great chip even if you can afford to do this.

The 2600K is hardly breaking a sweat handling Rift and SC. BF3 will most likely fully utilize all the cores. Oh, and your GPU will be working hard then as well. There is a high chance you will see temps you have never seen before.

PS: Do you have LLC enabled? If so, there are times when your CPU is being fed much more than the 1.52V it looks like it is getting...

Appreciate you reading through the whole thread; you've pretty much summed up the whole thing

The part on degradation really hit me though.. I'll be decreasing voltages & running a stress test soon. If things mess up I guess my chip simply isn't OC material & I'll have to go down to 4.8-4.9 instead (Which is far more reasonable in terms of temps).

My GPU is overclocked & stable. Haf-X case provides dedicated cooling to GPUs so my temps are well within 70deg @ 100% load.

Yes, LLC is enabled & at 100%. Read somewhere that it's good to have it there for "voltage headroom". What do you recommend?

Leave LLC on Ultra high, don't use Extreme LLC as that will more than likely create voltage spikes and can be dangerous with those high voltages. I recommend lowering it to ultra high and increasing the vcore to what you require. Ultra high doesn't tend to cause voltage spikes and does quite a good job of keeping it just below the voltage that you set in the BIOS. Extreme LLC doesn't do a good job of that, infact most of the time under load it will be more than what you set it in the bios which can be dangerous.

Have more control over your load voltage with LLC at ultra high.

My chip (unfortunately) was unable to maintain 5GHz without the major bump in volts & temps.

Instead I've down-clocked to 4.9GHz (102.1x48 multiplier) with a decent 1.47v @ 75% LLC. Temps are well within 75deg with Prime95 running. Too tired to bother tweaking any further.

Also I know it doesn't matter at all but I'm getting amazing idle temps of ~27deg. All these low temps make me feel all warm & fuzzy inside ^^ I guess I don't mind the -100MHz after all!

That's a lot if volts. Try 4.8 and see if you can get away with less volts. I bet you couldgrind a better balance.

That's sooooo much better, when you have time try tweaking it more, you could even probably lower the voltage.

By the way, atleast do some form of stability testing!!!! that 4.9ghz is pretty sweet and those temps are fab, but it won't matter a single bit if it's unstable.

Nevertheless nice overclock
