I noticed when I need to get to a file and its on one of my 1TB drives I have now the computer has to lag to let the drive do its things which in some cases drives me crazy because I am so spoiled by the SSD. Now I know you could say get another SSD but that out of the budget for now since I am doing an all new build. So I really could lose one backup drive and run 2 1 TB in raid 0 for speed... Would that make since ...?
RAID 0 is living dangerously, but its fast, as long as you don't care whats on the array if it fails and can reinstall everything then its fine.

What you say you're doing with backups would be RAID 1, which just mirrors everything to the second drive so you have two identical drives if one fails.

I currently have 2 WD black 750 GB since Aug-09 and could not be happier.

Also, on recent build May-11, I went with Seagate, Barracuda and so far, it's fast and low noise.
NOTE: I've had many Barracuda's over the years and never had one fail.

If you can afford it, WD black 6.0 G b/s

If it's for storage then a smart option is a WD Green 2TB, I have 4 and some are over 5 years old and working flawlessly.

If you really need that extra speed then grab the black, it's barely noticeable, plus they aren't recommended for storage drives. The only difference is that the greens stop spinning when not in use for a while, this is a good thing as it also preserves the disks. They start spinning when you start using them, takes about 3 seconds to wake up so no complaints.

Sequential speeds only. Their access times are awful.

WD Blacks still outperform them in basically everything.

I love my WD, its really fast and I don't hear it at all, but F3 is also a really great HDD so either or is a WIN in my book.
