Samsung F3 for breakfast, lunch and dinner
post #22 of 34
The F3s are the legendary drives.

1. F3s
2. WD Caviar Greens/Blacks
3. SeaGate Barracudas
4. etc.

Off topic: now that Seagate has Samsung, I expect their next gen. drives to be just as good as or better than the F3s.

On paper only.

I feel no difference in real world applications as shown in this review/benchmark. Also check out pages 5 to 7 on this page.

Based on my personal experience (2x WD 1TB Blacks) and those benchmarks, it's safe to say WD Blacks are not as snappy as they appear to be on paper.

I own and use the F3s and WD Blacks. Hitachi rules the roost now. I still never got around to buying Seagates after that firmware fiasco a couple years back.

*edit* I purchase HDDs based on price at the time of purchase and only when they're on sale on Newegg. Catch these drives on a 24hr sale or on a shell shocker deal and you save anywhere from 30%-50% off the original list price. I don't care for brands, they're all the same to me. Everything comes down to price and what you can afford.

That's old thinking. Seems like people here don't follow hdds as close as other parts of the PC. For every generation whoever packs the densest per platter will be the fastest drive. At the moment, that's Hitachi. Next will be Samsung with 1TB per platter 4TB drives later this year or early next year.

Samsung F3s and WD Blacks are already a couple years old, it's outdated tech.

This is because of your window's power management settings. The inactive hard drives are just being turned off (by default after 20 minutes of inactivity) so when you try to access your secondary drives they have to turn back on. This didn't happen before your SSD because you most likely had that 1TB drive as your primary operating system drive so it was always in-use and therefore not being powered off by windows.

Easy to fix:
  1. Go to start
  2. Type "power options" (no qoutes) in the search area and hit enter
  3. Click "change plan settings" for the plan you currently have enabled (has a filled in circle)
  4. go to "change advanced power settings"
  5. Expand "hard disk" by clicking the plus-sign next to it
  6. Expand "turn off hard disk after"
  7. Change this number to never (never is before 1 )
