Can You Game While Folding?

Thread Starter
Another question I had, but forgot to put in the OP.

I've noticed that even though the CPU runs at 100%, I can still use my PC without any sluggishness. I'm guessing this is because it's set up to use only idle CPU cycles?

Does this potentially mean that I can play a CPU intensive game just fine while it still folds in the back?

Also, at the moment I've only been CPU folding. Can I GPU fold at the same time? And if so, does it function the same way as the CPU folding where I would still be able to play a game whilst it folds?

F@H throttles, so yes, it's completely possible to do literally anything you'd regularly do while you fold. GPU's, I believe you have to manually pause before you start a game, but resume right afterwards. Although I've found out some games (Bad Company 2) will refuse to run smoothly for me unless I completely quit folding. Quite a bummer.

if you are doing SMP folding then no.If you are folding at all i wouldnt be gaming. It could take a big hit on your ppd. AMD GPU's arent very good folders. I would try bionic if i were you.
you can do anything you wish just be aware that your PPD will drop through the floor.

SMP folding is time sensitive... the more you game, the slower your PPD and the less points you get. GPU folding is not as constrained as SMP, you just need to be aware of your deadlines.

If you are folding with your GPU, its advised you pause as it will lag your game somewhat.

Yes, you can SMP and GPU fold at the same time. Since your running AMD (ATI), Client 7 would be better suited for your needs. You will also need to allocate one CPU core to assist your GPU in gaining better PPD.

Not sure about the gaming whilst CPU folding, but I can tell you that you cannot do any graphical stuff whilst you're GPU folding. With your card you'd be using Client v7 and basically in my experience if you even try to watch Youtube whilst GPU folding, your computer will crash.

So with GPU folding (on your 6850 using v7) you cannot game or watch videos/movies whilst it's running, however you can pause the work unit, so it's not that big of a deal.

I can do just about anything while gpu folding, including playing games (BC2 and WoW) and watching movies(blu-ray rips included).

Edit: Maybe you having AMD cards and me having Nvidia cards is the difference.

I was actually playing DoW II Retribution yesterday and I forgot I had F@H on. Didn't notice until I quit the game. And I didn't notice any performance issues but then again, DoW II isn't really hard to max out.
