Tablet to replace textbook/notebook in class?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, long time since I've been on OCN. Anyway, I'm looking into the option of buying a tablet with the primary purpose to replace my textbooks in class and hopefully my notebooks as well. I intend to use a combination of PDF, amazon ebooks, and whatever other formats the major retailers are offering textbooks. So full featured PDF and store app software is a must. I have a Droid X and must admit I'm partial to the android OS, but I'm open to whatever works well. Another thing I'd like to see is a tablet that can accept handwriting, preferably with a stylus. That way I can take notes seamlessly as well as follow in the book, all on the same device. Bonus points if there's a tablet that lets me input Chinese characters by handwriting, either integrated or available via app. I'd love to be able to whip out my tablet any time I see characters I can't understand and find it in some dictionary. Functional wifi is a must, because I imagine I'll be surfing the web quite a bit (especially in the boring classes biggrin.gif).

This is purely for school use, so I really don't need or want to pay for features such as HD video, fancy webcams, or 3G connectivity. An LED screen would be nice, since it saves power and looks nicer, but also must be pretty high resolution so I can read text clearly. Cost preferably under $500, otherwise I'd lose whatever savings I'm getting by going digital over print.

Thanks for the help guys! Look forward to seeing what kind of options are available nearly a decade after the flopped tablet PCs.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer with Keyboard Dock

with both, the tablet and the dock you have around 14 - 16hours of battery life, in a portable netbook form factor, it's light, less then an iPad, with the same specs as the Xoom and priced just right, you can't go wrong when getting this, hands down, this is what you want!!!

Wow that looks like everything my post just described! Any chance of it coming down in price? Haha I know $400 is a great deal already, but I heard ASUS is releasing a 3G version of the transformer supposedly this summer! Maybe they'd slash $50 off the older wifi only model?

You can hope, but no announcements have been made as far as I'm aware anyways, but ya if you can spare the extra cash later on I really can't stress enough on getting that keyboard dock as it's built in battery basically doubles you it's lifespan without charge as the tablet fees off it, but also it would be nice to not have to worry about needing to charge for most of the day smile.gif

"a battery good for up to 8.7 hours of use"

" it was made fairly clear that this guy was being aimed more at companies and less at consumers"

didn't sell me on that Article, Pad Transformer ftw!

Android tablet with handwriting recognition, stylus, aimed at work and productivity instead of games and movies.

Yea, that's totally not what the OP asked for.

Hmm I didn't realize immediately that the ASUS lacks stylus functionality. It is a great deal, and even if I got the Lenovo I'd still have to fork over extra for it. Still that stylus would be invaluable in class. Choices choices.......

I tell you, if that lenovo gets at least a minor dev community, that may replace the Kal-el transformer for my wanted tablet. Wonder if they plan a Kal-el iteration in the near future.
