Lets build a production machine.

post #1 of 16
Thread Starter
So I'm a longtime electronic music producer (dubstep mainly right now) and I am a well versed visual effects artist.

I am getting into some heavy effects rendering and my audio workstation can't keep up with the multilayered tracks I produce now.

I have a Presonus Firebox soundcard, but my CPU usage goes up to 60-70% and I get dropouts. Also, my machine just isn't up to par with the heavy requirements of some of these cpu intensive renderings I've been getting into.

Bottom line is, I want to build a new workstation.

My case is busted (literally) and my PSU is a BFG 800W.

I have a GTX280 which works great so I'll be keeping that.

So far, what I'm upgrading is gonna be:
-CPU I would like a 2600K for the hypterthreading
-Memory (Reaaaally important for VFX processing and render previews!)
-Motherboard
-Case (I don't need anything fancy at all. Cheaper the better)

Help me pick the best parts I can get for a budget around 600-750.

I don't need SLI. I do need Firewire and a lot of USBs (many midi controllers)

==sidenote===
Am I going to see a large performance boost by having DDR3 2000 vs having DDR3 1600???
============

Thanks for your help fellows!

Hmmm. How many USB ports do you need?
About the RAM: I'm pretty sure all you'll really notice is the price go up for 2000MHz, but that's what I've read. I haven't played with stuff like what you do very much, so I can't say it won't be that noticeable. I doubt it's really worth it though.

I will not be selling any old parts.

I really just need to figure what motherboard and memory to get.

I'm already set on getting the 2600k and having some kind of triple channel memory setup if I can.

I would ideally like to have at least 12 gb of memory.

Well, socket 1155 doesn't support triple channel memory so you're pretty much stuck with either 8GB or 16GB. RAM so cheap these days though that there's really no reason not to get 16GB if you need it.

I've never heard of dubstep but I like it great job! Are you close to a fry's you can get the 2600k and a z series board for around 400 for the best combo or cheaper boards if you dont mind the lower overclocks

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233143 here's some nice ram 4x4gb set for about $130 1600 speed

or 2133 speed for $200 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231473
