[TC Magazine] Leaked roadmap shows 10-core AMD desktop CPUs in 2012 - Page 27

What I want is a good upgrade over phenom II that will allows me to game with minimal bottleneck using more than one GPU without having to switch to Intel. First gen i7 IPC + good clockability will accomplish that. The extra cores for more productivity will be nice as well.

As long as they keep the price in check, that is a reasonable and acceptable target for AMD to hit.

And think about it this way: if you drive a bulldozer over a bridge made out of sand, what will happen?

That said I do not believe that AMD will be able to match the 3960X. But at 1/3 the price, who cares?

What I think is that the original Bulldozer is a stepping stone. It introduces the design concept. Then BD-E in 2012 is the full implementation -- all-new FM2 infrastructure. BD-E may or may not beat the Ivy Bridge Extreme Editions. We'll have to wait for more details to emerge, right now all we know is new socket, ten cores, and integrated northbridge. Hopefully we'll see better IPC. Then Next Generation Bulldozer will likely be a great enhancement. Hopefully after that AMD will have some new ideas... riding on the same architecture forever put AMD in the situation they're in now.
I don't even know where to begin with all these statements. LOL

So I'll hand'em over to anyone who cares to reply.

Good luck gentlemen.

I will say this much, I'm sure glad that I'm open to purchasing from either Intel or AMD, rather than relying on 1 company to hopefully come through.

Are you saying you don't have a preferred brand for any product, LOL. Cool I guess that works for you.

I have said many times on these forums that I have no problem buying Intel if AMD doesn't deliver what I need. I listed those requirements in the above post. Phenom II was a good buy over socket 1366 for the price. After sandy bridge showed up it is a not good buy anymore... but I haven't upgraded my CPU in the last 6 months.

If AMD can deliver what I want then I will buy AMD 100% even if Intel is slightly faster (i.e. overkill for what I desire).

If AMD can't deliver then I will buy Intel.

I just did that same with ATI/AMD and Nvidia. Nvidia doesn't have a card with enough Vram for my screen (2Gb+) at a reasonable price so I switched even though I have never previously used ATI/AMD cards.

Nothing wrong with defaulting to a company that has served you well in the past and giving them the benefit of the doubt before switching.

IB vs BD-E looks to be interesting because intel is bringing back regular overclocking for Ivy bridge as well as DDR3 3000 memory support

I always go with the best that my budget can buy.

My previous rig was AMD, this time around, it happened to be Intel, though originally I wanted a 1090T, but that didn't stop me from considering other options. Heck, I even had an AMD build in my cart for about a week before "pulling the trigger"

At the time the difference between a 1090T and 930 was under $50, and since the budget for the build was $2000, $50 didn't make a big difference one way or another.

This is the mentality I have for my 2nd rig right now, I do want to give AMD a chance again, but man, they sure are taking their sweet time in the process.

If I didn't have my current rig, I would've already built with a 2600K without hesitation.

I guess something you said in your post, reminded me way too much of what Usario said earlier, which is you guys will only buy AMD regardless, which IMO is pretty short sighted.

It's clear he's pro-AMD and Anti-Intel by his posting behavior, and hey, to each his own.

I'm just glad I'm open to buying from either company, which was the point I was trying to make.

Base clock overclocking returns once more, but with a twist. Much like overclocking an old Pentium 2 using DIP switches for 66MHz, 84MHz or 100MHz there will be various “base” speeds for the BCLK which can then be fine-tuned by up to 5% in either direction. This means that selecting a BCLK of 100MHz will allow a fine-tuning range of 95MHz to 105MHz. Unfortunately, we don’t know the base speeds at this moment in time but expect an update as soon as we know.

Just to put a bow on this whole thing...

My point was that I am looking for a certain performance increase over the Phenom II I own now. I'm well aware that SB already provides that, however, I am willing to wait to see what AMD does with bulldozer since I like thier products.

And while I may still buy BD even if slightly behind sandy in single core performance (so long as it can still push multi-GPU), if it is noticeably slower than sandy for lightly threaded workloads then I will grab the cheapest SB-E (want more pci-e lanes for tri-fire ).
I never said that I would buy AMD regardless. I'm typing this on a machine with an Intel processor and Nvidia graphics card.

But Intel doesn't have great ethics. They're anti-competitive... They paid OEMs not to use AMD processors. And until Sandy Bridge when they half-opened their eyes, they charged too dang much for their CPUs. And they'll still charge $440 extra for what is ostensibly the same chip because it has been deemed "extreme". I doubt the binning is that much different, and I doubt a decent stock cooler costs upwards of $400. So while I'm open to purchasing from either company, I wouldn't necessarily be happy to purchase from a company that tries to unfairly thwart competition and monopolistically overcharges for many of their products.

If Intel can offer a chip that is faster than Bulldozer in multithreaded workloads such as encoding and rendering at a similar or lower price I will seriously consider it. I do care somewhat about IPC but not as much as many people on here. I'd take a dodecacore Magny Cours Opteron over a hexacore Xeon because the Opteron (slightly) wins in multithreaded, the Opteron is cheaper, and the Opteron comes from a more ethical company.

990X is not a Nehalem processor - it's Westmere.

On the desktop side Nehalem only has a maximum of 4 cores and 8 threads - or less hardware than BD will have for it's flagship desktop release chips. At the rumoured launch price points, if BD can only match a 2-year-old i7 950 then Intel will be laughing all the way to the bank as SB cleans up.

And Penryn isn't Core 2.

The Phenom II X6 is about as fast clock per clock as the 1366 quad-core i7s. Bulldozer should be at least 50% faster than that.

Whoa, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. I have seen nothing that implies that bulldozer will be 50% faster per core than phenom II. It would be great if they could pull off 25% faster.

Also, PH II x6 will only catch an i7 clock for clock in certain heavily thread benchmarks so you can't state that as fact.
