Here's my latest dilema...

I've recently decided to do a Triple monitor setup and I've been through some reviews about triple monitor gaming on both cards and it seems the 6990 pulls through out top in most.

So... Seeing as eventually i may even sli or crossfire the cards at a much, much later date as games become more demanding which would be my best option? I'm leaning towards the 6990...

Thanks in advance, Nutty.

P.S. Only gaming will be done, no video editing or 3D work, etc.

EDIT: Stupid me I forgot to include the resolution... It'll be at 5760x1080

If the 6990 is ahead in reviews for triple monitors, and it's cheaper, why not get that?

Both cards are beasts so I don't think it matters that much

the 6990 has more Vram and can OC a bit more compared to the 590.

Get the 6990.

6990 wins this fairly easily. For massive resolutions like that, you really want a 2GB or larger framebuffer for optimal results.

I'd suggest reading the HardOCP high res review of the MSI 580 Lightning Xtreem (3GB) vs SLI 1.5GB 580s and CFX 6970s for reference.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/..._card_review/3

They show quite a few instances of the 1.5GB 580s choking in surround. For example.

6990 hands down for that res and 3 monitors.

If you only have one available slot, a 6990 hands down. 2Gb of VRAM will help, and they generally overclock better then the 590 (right now anyways). But if you have two slots and the power supply available, two 6950 2Gb or two 6970's are a better decision. But if you can swing a pair of GTX 580 3Gb models, I'd vote for them.

Not even a contest. For multiple screen set-up, the 6990 wins hands-down.

Not enough VRAM on those 590 for 3 screens.

Do you really want to get something like that? LOL!

6990

A couple of things to keep in mind:

1) Your case is very small. The 6990 comes in at a total length of 305mm, the 6970/6950 at 267mm. Measure before buying, there's a big chance you'll need a new and bigger case.

2) If you plan to crossfire two 6990s, your mb will run each @ 8x, therefore each gpu will have 4x (lanes) which will hurt performance. You'll need a new mb, preferably one with an nf200 chip, like the MIVE, p8p67 ws revo., p67-ud7, etc.

If you want to avoid changing your case and mb, try two 6970 or better yet two 6950s that unlock (if you can find one ) IF they fit in your case. If they don't, two 6870s in crossfire.

Thanks so much everyone! Im using a second hand 560 until i can afford the setup anyway.

@Wermad.

The 6990 will fit in my case easily. You'll be surprised by its potential!

Looks like it'll be the 6990 though. Ill look into 580 3GB Sli, it seems EVGA has a reference cooler on a 3GB card. That in Sli might be my best bet.
