have any ideas? I see it's mostly mixed now between vga, dvi, hdmi and DisplayPort

imo DisplayPort has a superior connector because it's so tiny

When a magical force removes every single display port to hdmi adapter in the world.

I think it will happen if/when:

1. Thunderbolt becomes standardized across all platforms (if that ever happens).

2. We go beyond the resolution limits of HDMI for televisions and/or DVI-D for monitors.

DisplayPort (DP) is said to replace VGA in 2014. The small connector is mini-DisplayPort (mDP), which was originally Apple's idea that was then adopted into the DP standard.

DP is probably going to be more popular in the business sector, where as HDMI is still more of a consumer technology. DP does not have royalties like HDMI so that is likely why it will be more popular with businesses.

All the high end LCD's have adopted DP already. Once we see DP on mainstream LCD's, that is what it will be widely adopted standard. DP is going to be a standard through business purchases, not consumer purchases imho. If you are on a Mac, DP is already the standard for awhile already.

Mini DisplayPort is nice. It's a small connector that can transfer high resolutions like DVI but smaller. The time it becomes standard may take a while. However, AMD's already switching to mostly Mini DisplayPort.

Businesses don't care what royalties HP or Dell or whoever had to pay to get a certain port on their computer, all they care about is that the computer works and doesn't break down.
