Recommendations on new audio setup

post #1 of 7

Prepare for wall of text

Well here's the situation, I'm building a new computer and I've rounded down the sound setup to 2 options: HT | OMEGA Claro Halo 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card w/ a built-in HI-FI Headphone Amplifier with a pair of Sennheiser HD555s or an Asus Xonar Xense which has Sennheiser PC350s with them. I've done my research and they both seem like fantastic headsets for about the same price. I'm willing to buy the HD558s or even the 558s if the quality is that much different. Additionally I'm a gamer at heart and my main bottleneck at the moment in my performance is my sound setup which consists of a 4 year old realtek controller on my awful k9a2 cf motherboard with a pair of broken Plantronics Gamecom 777. Also if you guys have any better suggestions for products please tell me. Thanks in advance

TBH if you want a really good opinion you should repost this at headfi as the users there are more experienced with audio.

However I can give some advice in this field. If all your looking for is gaming performance then its almost guaranteed that you'll benefit from either setups. How much you will benefit is subjective. Out of the components you listed the only one I have is the HD 555. Overall great detail, and sound staging because its open back but is a tad bit lacking in bass quantity to be amazing in games. Also it doesn't benefit very much from amping so it isn't necessary to buy a sound card with a built in headphone amp so you can save some money there.

My 2c

Thanks for the quick reply, btw I'm looking for a closed pair of headphones which the PC350s are, although I'm not sure about the Sennheiser HD series although I imagine they are.

Depends on which model in the HD series. They are all different.

HD 25 - Premier DJ cans -> closed back
HD 201/202 - Great Budget cans -> closed back
HD 555/595 - Midrange cans -> open back
HD 280 pro - Studio monitors but a tad bassy -> closed
HD 800 - Premium -> open

etcetc

as for a sound card i think that the Creative Titanium HD is better for you since you game alot , you can later change the OP-AMP for even better audio and it's PCIe

In that case I think i'll just go with the Xonar Xense combo since the pc350 have been getting great reviews and the combo is a lot cheaper than say an HT Claro card with a pair of HD 595/8s. Also I prefer closed ear design as I can hear things better in game.

I would go with that but it's not compatible with Windows XP and I play competetive COD4 so I don't wanna give that up.
