Upgrading away from the H50

Thread Starter
okay, so I have an h50 water cooler in a push pull setup where the push is a 140cfm fan pulled from my server and the pull is some Noctua cpu fan that I'm guessing is like 50cfm or something.

the H50 was kind of gimmicky and I don't find it all that efficient.

so if I were to upgrade where would I go?

are there air coolers that will outperform this with these fans?

and sadly I don't think I can afford a real water cooling loop.

just looking to hear your thoughts and hopefully pick out an awesome upgrade

noctua d14, or a h100, or even a h80 is a nice upgrade.

You'd probably get better temps taking off the crappy pull fan or even gutting it and turning it into a shroud.

H50 only performs a bit worse than the high end air coolers (by only like 2-3C I think), so really the best you're looking at here is a upgrade to a H80 or something. (5-8C better?)
AMD, I give up.

that noctua fan cost me like $25 lol I have far cheaper thermaltake fans I can gut lol

EDIT: what do I need a shroud for? never even looked into that so Im clueless

It leaves space between the fan and the radiator. That space lets the air be less turbulent (better airflow) and go through the radiator more evenly. (The space behind the fan's motor doesn't get airflow when right up against the rad)

At most you'll probably see a 1-2C drop with a shroud is my guess. But you may also get a slight drop by removing the 50 cfm fan too. If one fan is pushing at 140 cfm then any fan pulling at 50 cfm, the 50 cfm is just going to slow airflow at best or burn out the 50cfm fans motor at worst.
AMD, I give up.

The H80 will be a very, very nice upgrade. I can't stress enough if you want peace of mind cooling with a ton of horsepower. It's just been released as well, and it even beats asetek's kuhler 920.

Specifically, it's got a better radiator, pump, fans (that BEAT everyone's favourite scythe 1850RPM GTs) and almost everything else.

Here's a little comparison on the box of the H80 between the H60, which is very similar to your one:
