[CVG] Mass Effect 3: Can it sell big - without selling out? - Page 4

Am I the only one thinking that I'll be playing ME3 because of the storyline, the characters, and the plot?

The game is just a vehicle for delivering the story; this holds true of any RPG.

There honestly wasn't a major jump in gameplay between the first two games (squad interaction got simplified, and you didn't end up with 12 copies of 9 differing variants of the same ammo I admit the skills tree got dumbed down too far and insta-hit biotics/tech were a bit weird...) but I LSHMSFOAIDMT whenever I see people getting so offended that Bioware dare to introduce a slightly different gameplay mechanic

Wow I'm surprised so many people liked ME1 better I really thought I was in a bit of minority with that opinion. For me ME is all about the story and characters now, those are the only 2 reasons I'm so hyped for part 3. I'm sure the overall gameplay will be much more like ME2 than ME1 and I can live with that as long as the story stays awesome and the conclusion is epic.

The thing I REALLY didn't like about ME2 was how they dumbed down the armor/weapon system to a level nearing full retard. The saying, "If its not broken, don't fix it" couldn't mean more. If they bring back weapon heat/ME1 armor/weapon system to the third, I'll be happy.

I agree.

The armor and weapons weren't dumbed down, it was simplified. I don't get how people don't understand how most gamers don't like playing Inventory: The interactive game of managing your inventory.

ME1's armor and weapons were fun sometimes but very annoying at others.

Also, from various interviews I've seen with Bioware developers, they seem to genuinely care about player opinion and criticism. They're quite active with their fanbase on forums, and take everything they hear to heart. Obviously they can't appeal to everyone, but they do a good enough job.

@"overrated"
No one cares whether or not you think the reviews were deserved, the fact is ME2 was one of the highest rated games in recent times.
That's the kicker isn't it. Yes it was rated high by the critics but go look at the user score on all the metacritic sites. They are way too different than the official score. It's no coincidence that a low score game can have a high score by the users. These are payed critics who get payed from what they review and because of this their reviews are bull. Don't call it a conspiracy theory because I think the review scores are fixed. If you don't think EA is shoveling money under the table to the reviewers than good luck with that. I buy games based off the reaction from the gaming community not what some reviewer rated it because he probably got payed by the game's publisher.

Edit: for the record I bought DA2 at first I couldn't play for more than a day. Then a while ago I played and beat it. Yes the game design has recycled garbage but at least it has RPG elements and they call it an RPG. Wish I could say the same for ME2.

Everything we hear and know about the gaming industry at this point conflicts with what you're trying to tell me now.

The more crap they pile in the game to appease EVERYONE, the higher the budget, the higher the budget the more mainstream they'll make it in order to make sure it hits the sales target. Dev costs aren't negligible, they're EVERYTHING right now, they're the lions share of the budget.
Ok, it seems you have intimate knowledge of these costs. Care to share? Again, we're talking about the biggest names in the industry and a title that has already proven sales. So please, enlighten me on how much more development costs would be needed.

Let's assume a large team (10 developers) at 50k each per year and a lead at 70k. At six months, this team is paid a total of 285k with an additional 100k in expenses (this is all estimated). So, I come up with an additional 385k to add some more functionality to a game already being developed. Let's assume, I'm way off and the costs are triple (unrealistic, imho, but anyway). That brings our costs to ~$1Mill. Explain to me how added sales won't realizes that number in their revenue.

What are you talking about?
Maybe I'm stupid, but 90 user score seems pretty damn good.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/mass-effect-2

EDIT: As for your conspiracy crap, don't you think it's a bit risky/stupid to try and bribe every major review site? Can you imagine the backlash companies would get if just one person came out and announced that EA/Activison/etc tried to bribe them? Honestly, if you think about it for about 2 minutes you'll realize how crazy this paranoid view of the gaming world you have is.

If you enjoyed DA2 more than ME2, that's fine. It means you care more about gameplay than storylines in RPGs, which to me makes no sense. DA2 was trashed because it had both a terrible storyline and bad gameplay mechanics; not one or the other.

I think a lot of people's problem with Mass Effect is trying to judge it as an RPG or a Shooter or whatever. Why does it even matter? All I know is that it's a fun and engaging interactive experience. When you objectively judge the games' mechanics and production value, you'll be hard pressed to find games that are as well-rounded quality-wise. This is why I have enjoyed the series and will continue to in ME 3 given the level of quality the series has established is continued.

Mass Effect 2 is a very good game it is just less appealing to people looking for hardcore RPG elements.
