help building new rig

Thread Starter
my buddy wants me to help him build a new Intel rig, with a $1200 budget. He wants a blu-ray drive at least. If anyone can give me suggestions id greatly appricate it. He will be using this computer for school, photoshop etc, and BF3 and gaming.

do you want intel or amd?

amd has a new processor line coming out, you may want to wait for that to see if it shifts intel's prices around too

EDIT: I just built a rig for a friend for $1200 just switch to a slower processor and maybe a gtx 560 and you will easily make the budget with a blue ray =D

I recommend that evga mobo I have in my build log its quite amazing.

but I would go with the 2500k especially if you are overclocking
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115072
and probably go down to a 560 to cut costs on graphics, can really be any 560 you want, they're basically all the same
=)

EDIT: some people didnt like the PSU I picked out either saying "it's old" I didn't quite understand that as power doesn't change right? guess it's just a preference thing.

What parts does he have, if any?

If he can stretch his budget just a bit and has a monitor already he can definitely go for a better GPU.

Otherwise:
- i5 2500k ~$180-220
- P8P67 Pro ~$180
- GTX 560ti ~$280
- Any midrange case ~$100
- Any quality PSU is fine for one 560ti ~$100
- 2x4GB kit of decent speed RAM (i.e. G.Skill, Kingston, Corsair 1600MHz and up) 8 gigs is more than you need, but with DDR3 prices so low and the possibility of needing it make it a decent purchase. ~$80
- CM 212+ ~$30
- Spinpoint F3 1TB drives are one of the best, if not the best for the money 7200 RPM 1TB drives. I have one, I love it. ~$60
- LG Blu-ray writer/reader ~80

~1060

If you find good deals you can easily fit a monitor in.
