Really, Asus?

So my mother has an Asus G73-JH to play LOTRO on. It's got a mobile Core i7, 8GB DDR3, and an HD5870m. Pretty high end system, cost us ~$1000 about eight months ago.

Well last week her computer started shutting down randomly while playing LOTRO, and I tracked it down to her GPU hitting >100*C while playing (highest GPU-Z recorded was 107*C, averaged around 95-102*C). It idled at 75*C. I decided it needed the dust cleaned out and the GPU TIM reapplied. Since this would be a major PITA, I had things I needed to do, and didn't have a torx screwdriver to open it up with, I dropped it off with a local computer shop for them to take care of.

Just got it back, and holy crap. After getting out the small amount of dust that had accumulated (after only 8 months after all) and reapplying the heatsink with AS5, the load temperatures dropped to 70-75*C in LOTRO, 80*C in Furmark. Idle temperatures of 47-52*C.

Really Asus? Your thermal paste is so crappy that after less than a year the laptop already overheats? How much would it have cost to use Shin Etsu or AS or *anything* other than the cheap silicone crap that you used? On a $1000 laptop you shouldn't be trying to save $0.30 by using cheap thermal paste. And the paste degraded so quickly! Ridiculous.

At least the laptop is usable again. I like Asus for offering good gaming laptops at reasonable prices, but they really need to pay more attention to the details.

Maybe there was more dust on there than you think and that was the major problem

I find this happening on lots of laptops with dedicated graphics. I had to do mine last month also.

sorry to hear about that man. Sounds bad on asus' part that they would cheap out like that. I mean even the cheaper but still somewhat ok paste would have worked. But to use paste that is that crappy, wow man, just wow.

Your mom is cool then

I'm having a similar problem with my HP laptop, gonna have to open her up one of these days and reapply thermal paste and clear the dust out.
