best cooling for 6970 cf

Thread Starter
I have the Haf-x case with the vga air duct and i read somewhere that unless the gpu blows the air out of the case the air duct isnt really that effective at cooling the cards. I have Asus p8p67 pro mobo and was thinking of getting MSI Lightning but wasnt sure if that would be as effective as say getting SLI reference designs that i assume blow air out of the case and not inside it.

I am planning on purchasing 1 of these cards right now and then when the Southern Islands come out and prices drop adding another for CF.
Also would i be able to find/fit SLI lightnings on my mobo say a year from now

Those non-reference "twin frozr" coolers from MSI offer the best aftermarket cooling power over the other brands. They're tons better than the reference, standard coolers from AMD.

Going SLI with those will definitely be quite future proof imo, since that will result in a 6990 surpassing performance, and that is already the world's #1 GPU.

Here are some of the temperatures in the reviews:

http://www.kitguru.net/components/gr...-phase-pwm/23/

http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-ra...hting-review/9

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/..._card_review/9

So as you can see, the cooling power is pretty amazing.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Int...specifications

You have 2x PCI-E x16 lanes on your mobo which will fit fine.

You will be running them in a x8 x8 PCI-E configuration, and that will work great too, since x16 vs x16 isn't that much faster anyway.

Those MSI twin frozr ones are also not triple slot or anything too big, which should fit fine tbh. The only issue I can see is if you have a soundcard or anything like that, because it might get blocked off.

As far as temps go, you shouldn't really get much problems as the twin frozr ii coolers are really, really good at keeping heat down. Just make sure you have good airflow in your case and there should be absolutely no problems.

The Air Duct does decrease temps in SLI/CFX setups so if you already have 2 cool cards, you can add the fan in for more cooling

or, go to korea and get 2 zerotherm coolmaxx 4000s, lol. those look so badass, impossible to find though. only other suggestion is what im doin, and using t-rad2's (23mm) and scythe jyu fans (12mm). ends up being just as thick as a normal 69xx. If you have enough room, use 25mm fans instead, i just need the extra clearance for my sounds/physx card

Interesting... ?

And it isn't aftermarket cooler, it is a custom cooler.

I think the asus DCII is also great. But definetly they're the 2 best non reference cards with the 2 best coolers.
