Building around an AMD 955 BE

Thread Starter
I'm going to build a pc which I had planned on being built around an intel i5 2500k but I've decided to just go with an amd 955 be instead for the time being. I need some help choosing which parts to build around it with. this pc will mainly be used for gaming and hd video. I'm looking at about a $500 budget. anyone see any good deals out there for parts to make this pc come alive? I'd love to have a mobo that's overclockable a little bit but don't plan on pushing too much. 8gb of ram would be nice. for cooling I think a cm 212+ will probably be fine. whatever ideas everybody has I'm all ears.

What parts do you need? What not?
Do you ever intend to go CrossfireX or SLI?
Any parts to be recycled?

mainly what I need is the motherboard, ram and psu. I have a nvidia 9800gt akimbo for a graphics card but not sure if I should upgrade it or not. I already have a case and hdd. I wouldn't mind even buying a diy combo or some kind of package to save a little if something like that is out there. as for sli and crossfire I don't think that's something I'm going to use for the time being but if I can get a board that supports them for a reasonable price then why not. nothing to be recycled.

DIY combos don't save you money.

If you intend to max your budget, $500 can get you a decent motherboard, 8GB RAM, crossfire ready PSU, and a really good GPU. My recommendation:
ASRock 970 Extreme4 - $105 + $7 shipping
Patriot Signature 2x4GB DDR3-1600 CL9 - $63 shipped, $43 after rebate
Antec EA750D - $75 shipped
eVGA GTX 560 TI - $235 shipped, $210 AR (no wait rebate/9 day return)
NEWCUSTOMER10 - $10 off promo code for new account orders

Total initial cost: $475 shipped
After 9 days: $450 shipped

Room left over (unless CPU needs to be in this budget too)

I second the 560TI as an upgrade for the video card. If you're looking to build a PC for gaming the 9800gt will do you no good with a 23" monitor.

unfortunately I was including the cpu into the $500 as well. on top of that I need to buy a copy of windows 7 so I'm really pushing it. what do you guys recommend with that in mind?

The GPU can be reduced to a GTX 460 1GB or HD 6850 and you will still have large benefit over the 9800GT.
EDIT: Need 7 too!? That complicates things...

Change of plans:
Phenom II x4 955 - $110 after promo [Newegg - see link]
ASUS M5A97 - $90 shipped [Superbiiz]
Patriot Signature 2x4GB DDR3-1600 CL9 - $63 shipped, $43 after rebate
Rosewill RG530 530W 80+ PSU - $50 shipped
ASUS GTX 460 1GB - $155 shipped after promo [Newegg - see link] - $125 after rebate - no wait rebate/9 day return
NEWCUSTOMER10 - $10 off promo code for new account orders
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 - $84.49 shipped [OutletDeal - see link] - great deal I found for you
Initial total cost: ~$512.49 shipped
Total cost after 9 days: $482.49 shipped
Total cost after Patriot rebate (~6-12 weeks): $462.49 shipped
