Advice on Purchase (MBP)

Thread Starter
For those of you guys who have the 13" macbook pro, well, I've been considering buying one with like a max budget of about $1500. From what I understand, I can get like the high end 13" model (since the 15" is waay higher than that).

I was just wondering, since I've never really used a mac before, will it be fine for college if I'm only a biochem major? And are there any huge compatibility issues (Software or hardware) that I should really know about that I could avoid if I went windows?

I own a lot of PC's so I just wanted to try getting a Macbook for once haha, and I finally can so I thought it'd be a good idea. Afaik, the specs for the 13" high end model are like:

i7 Dual Core 2.7GHz
500GB 5400RPM HD
Intel HD 3000 gpu
4GB ram

The only game I really play is like TF2 or SC2 and even at that I play them on low settings since it's easier on the high, so I'm pretty sure I won't have performance issues with those.

Eh, might have some issues with SC2. I am not sure if you can, but I would recommend getting a faster HDD or even SSD.

Lol I don't think they even offer 7200RPM drives, and SSD's are way to expensive since I care more about the space

I meant upgrading in the future. Apple overprices everything. But I am not sure if you can just open the MBP up and replace the HDD.

Yeah I could probably do that, and it seems worthwhile too if I notice the difference between 5400 and 7200 rpm.

Does anyone have experience with like bootcamp, and how that works? Do you just partition a part of your HDD for the other OS or something?
So like if I ran the partition with the OSX I wouldn't really notice anything performance-wise except, obviously, less space right?

My GF's 17'' MBP i7 dual has no issues. She also pushes it to the max. And with upgrading, you can upgrade ram/hdd through the battery compartment.

Is the 5400rpm vs 7200rpm difference that noticeable for the mbp?

The 2.5" HDDs don't run as well as their 3.5" counterparts so the difference between 5400 and 7200 is barely noticeable on a laptop from experience. If you are after storage stick with the 5400 and upgrade to SSD at a later date when they become cheaper (the Mac will last your for a good while) or your storage needs change... that is the real speed boost

Lol alright.

Yeah my biggest issue with this is if I'm going to have issues with any software or anything in college but from what I'm hearing I shouldn't be worried about that.

Do they have like docking stations and things like that, since I'm planning on hooking it up with my monitor, keyboard, mouse etc.
