Core i7 740QM temperature problems

Thread Starter
I have a question, I have a Toshiba laptop with a Core i7 740QM chip that idles at 60c-65c and on load it reaches 80c-90c not using Prime95 or a stress program (even one time it reached 95c and the processor had to downclock itself to prevent TJ.Max), now I suppose this is not normal and something wrong is going on, here's what I'm asking for your help guys, what should I do to lower my laptop's temperatures?

Or in the worst case, do I have a bad computer and should send it to warranty??

Also, what would be a "normal" temperature?

(Note: The high temps you see on CoreTemp were reached when I opened Internet Explorer, a very simple process and as you can see the only programs I have open are CPU-Z, CoreTemp and the TaskManager).

Thanks for the help.

I would try cleaning it out first.

I clean out mine every few months. I don't use it in high dirt areas, but it still seem to gather some, and blowing the dust out seems to keep it running cooler.
I have an i7 Q720 and it normally idles around 50C +/- 3C. I haven't run any stress tests on it, but I''ve never seen it go above 65C when i'm editing or streaming videos, etc.
To be honest, I don't even know if my temps are normal, but I've never had it shut down due to high temps.

Hope this helps,

Rich

Thanks for the response Rich, I will try cleaning it but I doubt I will help me in this case since I don't even use the laptop much and always have it inside a laptop case. :/

Also, I'm not running any stress programs like Prime95 or such, I'm just video rendering or gaming.

Has it always run hot?

I wonder if it could be the CPU is seated badly. I know I've seen a thread or two about folks cleaning and re-installing the CPU to make sure the thermal paste is making good contact. I don't know that I'd ever try that. I can build a desktop, but the way they cram all the parts into a laptop makes me cringe. confused.gif Taking a few covers off and blowing out the dust are about all I'm up for. redface.gif

The only other thing I could suggest is one of those laptop coolers with the fans inside.

Good luck,

Rich
