Hoodcom's 690 Mod

Thread Starter
Hey all.

I am posting some pictures and videos here of the work I am doing for Hoodcom on a CM 690.

Just got done with my usual Front Panel Cable Sleeving routine and next up I'll be modding and installing a pair of USB to PS/N64 adapters so Hoodcom can game in style with the controller of his choice.

Hoodcom located the adapters on eBay and the vendor shipped them lightning fast. I purchased the sleeving from Performance-PCs because I have done so much business with them. I was a little appalled that the least expensive shipping option for 4 ounces of sleeving material was USPS Priority at almost $9. Ouch. But after I asked them real nice they shipped it USPS 1st Class for about $5. Times must be tough.

Anyway...it's not the fabric type sleeving but good old techflex. Just something to hide all the rainbow spaghetti streaming from the Front Panel gizmoids. A cabling black out to match the tast black interior of the CM 690.

Hoodcom is percolating with ideas so there may be more to this mod than a little fussing wih cables and adapters...we'll just see where it goes. I'm flexible.

I'll be updating this as I progress.

Thanks to Hoodcom for the work

Sleeving done now on to the PS/N64-to-USB Port Adapters Thingy

You can get these off eBay for about $15 each.

I'll replace the external USB plug with an internal USB cable so the adapters can plug right into the motherboard.

A quick test with the multimeter determined the black and blue were both grounds. USB has a Red power lead, a black ground lead and white and (usually) green data leads That always o Red, White , Green, Black. On most motherboards black is to the left on header. So even thouh one of the data leads is yellow I could still decode the proper way to patch in the internal USB cabling.

As luck would have it two of the adapters would fit in the width of the DVD Blank Plate. And even without extending the leads the ports will reach the face.

I cut a piece of black anodized aluminum sheet to fit behind the CM DVD Blank.

I used the tri-square and a small tool to mark the cut outs for the slide switches.

I used the drill press then a sharp 1/4" chisel and finally a jeweler's file to make the slits.

Friction fit. Yay.

Now the fun part...the PS port holes.

It was midnight and time to stop playing with power tools.

More soon

Okay this neat little gizmo is completed. Took a lot of effort, but I think it came out great.

And a window with a hole for a 140mm fan.

That's good to hear. My internet connection is very slow so it takes a long time to upload videos. Pics not so much.

Took one of the adapters apart. I can probably mount the PCB switch facing out to the DVD Blank Off and put both ports above the switch. There are two blue LEDs. Do you want them to do something? I could eliminate them, leave them as is or solder on leads and put them somewhere.

I think those just indicate which port is being used...

I can think of two ways of going about this one.

Place the LED's next to the ports they light up for, or we can remove them and just rely on the switch position to help indicate which port is enabled.

I don't what you have in mind for the port layout.

You definitely got a good plan going there, I'm liking the layout pretty well!
