Worth it to wait it out for 7000?

Thread Starter
I know there isn't alot of information about the next gen of GPU's yet but I wana make a thread about this to see what everyone here thinks.

Basically I'm not sure if I should upgrade from my 4850 to a 6950 2gb. I know it will be a huge upgrade and all but I am not sure for a couple of reasons.

1. My 4850 still runs great in the majority of games out there. Only games it can't max out are BC2, Metro and maybe a couple of other games. Every other game it gets by very good.

2. The jump from the 4000 series cards was huge, huge like I have a feeling the jump from 6000 to 7000 will be. Mainly due to the 28nm switch.

3. I still have DDR2 and a Q6600 (as good as it still is), would a 7950 really be appropriate for such old hardware?

So I figure a 6950 2gb would last a while but still with all these rumours about the 7000 series cards. Even though I am thinking I should wait a 6950 can be had now for 260$ easy. Do you think they will drop in price much more when the new cards some out?

Man I wish we knew more about the future. I don't know about you but these 7000 cards better be worth the wait.

Last gen higher end cards do hold there value somewhat, due to being similar in performance to freshly released flagships(not dual GPU variants)... Although, if you can hold out for the 7XXX, go ahead and do so.

The 4850 to 6950 wont surprise as much as you're hoping(other than TDP/DX11), if you can game on high settings for most games you play.

Grab another 4850 on the cheap, CFX and clock your Q6600 to 4Ghz and you're set till 7XXX.

The question is can you wait?

The 7000 series is due out around the same time BF3 is out.

I am waiting.

I would wait out for the 7000 series though, they're coming soon. I wouldn't be able to say much about your hardware though.

I noticed a huge difference going from a 4870x2 to a GTX 570.

That's kinda what I thought. Considering how well my 4850 still does.

I've heard different stories about when 7000 is coming, some say Oct or Nov and some say early 2012. I hope its sooner than later.

I haven't had much luck getting my Q6600 to 4ghz though, it gets way too hot.

Cleaned up, moved to AMD/ATI forums.
I guess the above is up to you.

Cards unless bought used still stay pretty closely priced in their performance/fps.

High end 79XX is going to be in 2012, I would wait it out personally. I mean 6950's would be fine to play anything but 7950 (for example) is likely only going to be say 350$ vs about 250$ for the 6950. And about a 15-25% performance gain.

But I think were expecting much bigger numbers from 28nm

If nVidia is delaying their GPUs, I wonder if ATI/AMD is going to be forced to delay their 7000 series as well. Something to think about.

I'd say hold out like me on CF

and 4GB of DDR3 starts at ~$30, good 1600MHz CL7 or 8 could be had for $70-80, probably less just checking newegg, prices are really low
