Ive never used the 790i, but try to look for something to set everthing back to factory default until you learn how to overclock it yourself.

What is the best way I should test the temperatures? Should I run the Prime 95 program and see what I get. I can tell you that I recently tried encoding for the first time and everything was going great temperature wise. I had core temp running while it was encoding and the temps were normal for about 3 minutes and then all of a sudden all of my cores were hitting the 200 degree Fahrenheit mark and then my computer just froze and I had to reboot.

That is what made me think that either my Cpu voltage is too high or 3.75Ghz just isn't realistic for this rig.

When I do end up running a stress program such as Prime 95, is it dangerous that my cores get too hot like that or does the program shut the computer down when that happens? Sorry again for not knowing but I am eager to learn.

Sir it is Ghz not Mhz. Oh and sorry to burst your bubble tht pc is good but several generations old now.

However to help, stop trying to overclock now, spend a day reading manuals. Then start over.

Watercooling? for the love of god, you should clean your loop.

You never know what condition its in when you get a second hand one, it could be gunked up and the reason your temperatures are high. Are the tubes clear?

Make sure you learn too maintain your loop - Ive seen some horror stories, people getting second hand gaming rigs with watercooling loops, they dont maintain them and then 12 months later they wonder why their rig is overheating.

By the way, I would just decrease your voltage too 1.4, then run intel burn test for 20 passes. if it passes, decrease the voltage by 0.010 again, then test it again for 20 passes. keep decreasing your voltages until it crashes, then turn it up until where it last didnt crash.

Then run prime 95, for an hour. If it crashes, turn ur voltages up by 0.010 again, then run prime 95 for an hour again. When it doesnt crash after an hour, turn it up 0.010 again and leave it for 3-4 hours. Thats how I stability test personally. Use core temp or other, too make sure your temperatures dont exceed 80. mine hit 85, but that is REALLY pushing it. I wouldnt recommend going above 80 for a CPU thats years old and has already been overclocked for a while.

Alternatively, you could just press F5 in your bios, Im not sure about your bios, but in mine F5 gives me an option to reset everything to default. So youl be running stock clocks and everything. Make sure your ram mhz matches up too the rating of your ram, and you should be good too go, for gaming for a while. Then when you feel that you need more power, Push your clocks up slightly from stock then stability test them like i said above, if your stable after an hour then push the clocks up more.

Whoops, sorry about that. Won't make that mistake again. I know my system is older but it's the nicest PC I've ever had!! I'll just have to change the name of my rig since I'm a little behind the times.

I'll take your advice and just read up on overclocking and then starting from scratch.

Good luck! I'm not in a much better boat than you are. I was running stable for a long time at only 3.4 from 2.8 and I actually did have a crash out after literally about 6 months went by. I wanted to keep voltages at stock though so I suspect that probably had something to do with it. I just turned it back down to about 3.0 and it's been running fine since. Oh and the computer just flat out told "unstable due to overclocking" so you will know if you get this error lol Best of luck! Go slow, play with the voltages and hopefully it will go well!
