iOS and linux?

Thread Starter
a few years back i had a ipod touch, 2nd generation and a iphone 3gs, i believe both were running iOS 3.0 and i do remember using like banshee and amarok to keep them synced with my music collection.

i got rid of them both, a move i did regret, but now i got a ipod touch third generation 32gb model with iOS 4.3.3 (found it on ebay for $30, all it needed was a digitizer which i had for some odd reason, if you were wondering why i didn't go 4th generation ). i've followed all the guides i could find, read a few hours of bug reports about usbpmuxd having a typo in a rules file, i correct it...still no joy.

lsusb sees it, but nothing else will...

i'm using crunchbang atm, the 64 bit edition of statler...

the touch is jailbroken (came like that i swear ), i've been able to ssh into the device and use filezilla to transfer stuff to it, but it doesn't always show up in the library...i'm pretty sure i've done something wrong...

btw, if it had "ipod" in its description, i installed it as a last ditch effort...please i really don't want to set thru the torture of installing windows just for itunes...i will be next trying to install itunes in wine, this should be interesting

thanks in advance

apparently itunes actually works OK-ish in wine xD

idk, i dont use ipods i thought banshee could sync with it either way though? if its spotted on lsusb, but doesnt show up anywhere else (like /dev/) then its possible you might have to get a kernel module for it

its kinda funny cause lspci and lsusb will tell you EXACTLY what hardware is (most the time) even if it doesnt have a module loaded, so if it shows up in one of those two but doesnt show up in /dev then chances are you are just missing a module

does an ipod use a different module than the generic external usb storage device one in linux?
Kinda meh now...

IIRC Apple obscures their library items by scrambling the file names and creates an index of them. You can't simply add items to the library.

If you don't want to install Windows the OpeniBoot team is looking for someone to port it to the iPod Touch 3G. If you get that running you can install iDroid and forget Apple and their complete lack of Linux support.

Wow, didn't realize these problems existed! Not to flamebait, but I'm glad I've always been an Android guy. Back in the day I did use gtkpod, but I'm sure that's probably not kept up to date with the new iOS devices and is probably only for legacy iPods.

When I last used my jailbroken iPod touch (1st gen, not that it matters) I installed a music app from cydia (can't remember which one, but any should work) and just synced wirelessly through sshfs, sftp, or any means of ssh connection. It's not too hard, and all you need is a wireless router, and a third party music app (jailbroken apps only).

I get that sometimes with my wireless drivers. Its one of the reasons I rarely use Linux on my sig rig.

2.6.39's ath9k_htc driver works, but 3.0.0's ath9k_htc driver won't even see the device.

update: it appears something has changed again in testing LOL.

i'm able to see the ipod in the filebrowser, but i am unable to access its filesystem or use any of the programs like rhythmbox or banshee to transfer music to or from it now.

slightly annoyed.
