Did my friend make the wrong choice? - Page 3

Ok. Yes there may be another cpu in the 1366s lineup coming, but I wouldn't hold my breath for it.
Sandy Bridge (IE the i5-2500k and similar chips) are 1155 socket.
Ivy Bridge will be available in both 1155 socket and in 2011 socket versions.
Oh and the upgrade path after the 1155 socket is the 2011 socket.

The 1366 platform is not bad, but he could have done far better with the money.
Gaming does not require an i7 to do well. The i5 would have sufficed. And saving the money from the i5 to the i7 would have paid for a substantial gpu upgrade, which would have made a difference. Well that and triple channel memory which really doesn't give you a big performance boost. So all in all going with the P67/Z68 setup would have gotten him a far better system.

But too late to cry over it now. There are enough ways to eek out good performance from the 1366 system, and it will do him well regardless.

Also, where did he buy it from? If its newegg, ive heard that they dont have a problem with people returning their purchases there. People seem too just buy things, and if they dont like them they send it back, resulting in an open box special at newegg.

Maybe he could return some of his parts.

The cpu, motherboard, ram, and GPU. The 1155 boards are a lot cheaper, so he could get something along the lines of a gigabyte p67 ud3, or an asus p8p67, some kingston ram, and the i5 2500k - and he would be able to get a powerful video card. He will be much happier with that.

Personally, I'd go with the 960.

Better support for multiple GPUs, and faster for multiple GPUs. And it's a very powerful Hyper-Threaded CPU.

Bad choice.

If he had a different video card, he could at least take advantage of the 3x SLI, but the 560 cards only allow you to do a 2-card configuration.

He shoulda went with the 1155 socket and 2600k the 960 waset that great of a chip. If he wanted a 1366 chip he shoulda got a 970 to have 6 cores and 6 ht ones for a total of 12 cores.
