Sandybridge at its limits? - Page 3

And this reminds me that I need to post my sandy stable overclock. Although, I might overclock it some more, especially since my temps are still roughly around 70 tops. I might be able to get a good 4.8 out of it, but I wont go anywhere near 1.37 volts. I hear max is 1.365 for safety, unless of course your cooling can handle it. I still wouldnt go above it though, besides a 4.5 overclock is ridiculous as it is. I might shoot for 4.8 soon, whenever I get time.

For stability I ran 12 hours of prime blend and 20 passes of linx using all 16gb of memory, took like 6 hours, ran a few passes of IBT, but after 12 hours of prime and 20 passes of linx, I think its pretty stable. I just have to post it to the sandy stable. I keep forgetting.

I know. Read my full post please.

You should be getting more than 100GFlops and your temp will reach 80c+ or more.
Also try the AVX with 4.8 or under first.... and look at what temp you'll be getting.
AVX will give you 10c or so more than any other tests.

I see you are getting 83c without AVX with 1024 RAM @ 5.1.
So there is no way you can make the "ALL" ram tested with AVX...
since it'll give you way over 95c...I'm afraid.

Here is my LinX w/AVX 1024 RAM run @ 5.0GHz
Look at the GFlops I'm getting andt the temp....
As you see....this is the reason why I don't run this 24/7.
Yes thank you for the advice lots of good info there. However read my full post and see I wasa just messing around. Not trying to call it stable or anything.

As far as Core Temp goes, I have the same issue, I don't know why it doesn't show the correct clocks. (Windows System Properties doesn't either for that matter).

Not sure on the UEFI BIOS.
Yup I will. I know its weird...

I think 4.5 ~ 4.8GHz range may be your safest route to go, especially temperature wise in the end, thanks to Tunagoblin for showing that.

Here is an example of a 2600K at 4.5GHz, though I know yours is a 2500K, but I don't think temperatures vary too much between the two, do they?

This is from full 50 passes of IBT with AVX, using as much as my RAM as possible, and then nearly a 20 hour run of PRime95 Small FFTs:

I hope these examples will help you deal with some testing for the most stable overclock you can get!
Thanks for your help!

Windows wont show the correct clocks for the sandy bridge. You have to remember with these chips you are not overclocking the base clock, but the turbo mode. It shows as 3.4 in windows because technically it is still at 3.4 but you are running it with a maximum of x.xghz turbo mode, and with the changes in the bios you are running it constantly. CPUZ is the only thing that will recognize this other than realtemp.

EDIT:

Also when you get a chance take a look at the Sandy Stable thread for overclocking, voltage, temperature and cooling reference. I can tell you that those volts are quite high for that overclock. Lowest voltage I have seen so far at those overclocks is around 1.33v and yours is the highest so far lol. With those kind of voltage, assuming your CPU has the potential and you have the cooling, you could go upto around 5.1/5.2ghz.

I would recommend lowering the voltage and taking a look at the table in the Sandy Club I mentioned. Link is in my sig

Ok so I was able to run prime95 for 9.5 hours (needed my rig may run longer if needed). Got pretty hot but I don't think too hot.

Also I downloaded IBT AVX and ran 5 times with standard memory just to try it out.

Now some of you said I need to max the memory and run it how many times and I should be good? How long should it take to run? I read somewhere it takes like 2.5 hours is that correct? Does anyone think I need to run anything else?

Run it on at least high settings, they say for total stability 50-100 runs of AVX. I only do 20 that has proven good enough for me.

Firstly, do a test run, and check Task Manager's Performance tab to ensure all the cores are being tested.

I've read that you usually have to manually select the threads, but I think that may be so for Hyper Threaded CPUs, but it wouldn't hurt to make sure, that or just set it to 4 and you'll be perfectly fine.

By using as much RAM as possible (You can choose customize and manually enter it in), and test for at least 50 passes, monitor for at least the first 25 as you will want to keep an eye on your temperatures.

If it runs too hot, then you'd want to downclock a little bit with lowered voltages, and try to make that stable so you are running at better temps.

This isn't something I'd leave alone with out knowing how hot it gets in the first 20 ~ 25 passes.

If 50 passes are successful, you can try 100 and / or begin testing Prime95 stable. (Small FFts, Blendtests), not sure which method would be the best, but it never hurts to run both tests to ensure you are stable.
