I find marksman is much better to use if you are fighting against a team with several healers on it because of its high sustained damage. Energy management is easy and you can burst someone with explosive probe, ambush, follow through combo. Then you settle into a high sustained damage rotation. The problem is that you have to stay in cover. This leads to problems with people line of sighting you and when sentinels notice you. Also, your damage gets mitigated by defense and shields often. On the plus side, you have a decent amount of defense with hunker down, ballistic screen, ballistic dampers, cover screen, and shield probe.
With lethality, you have much higher burst damage using cull and both dots on the target. You can also abuse line of site and dots because you do not have to use cover (series of shots and explosive probe are still nice fillers if energy permits). You do a lot more internal damage, so high armor/defense enemies melt as fast as anyone else. Energy management can be difficult because it is all dependant on how often you crit on your poison effects. There are a few problems I run into with this build (I’m sure part of it is me still learning). Cull is your big damage dealer, but you need to have corrosive dart and corrosive grenade on your target to maximize damage. I find that corrosive grenade's long cool down can be a problem. You can also waste a lot of energy applying dots on someone who then gets focused down very fast (pick targets smartly). Also because of your massive energy usage, it seems like there CAN be a large twiddle your thumb time (using rifle shot) while you wait on energy. If you are critting often, it's not so bad.
I hear a lot of people do well with an engineering build or a marksman/engineering hybrid build. I have not tried them, so I won't comment.

Thanks. I am currently working on an operative but was thinking about giving sniper a shot (no pun intended). One thing i dislike is having to be in cover to use certain moves. I find it easy with my jugg or sorc to come up from behind and wreck the guys in cover. I really like the idea of being able to move around when fighting so the (lethality?) build might be my thing.

Maske,d what do you mean remove ability delay, as in the Global Cool Down?

will I be able to instantly cast and instant right after an instant cast?

If so that would be really sickening lol, Between Ground Aoe, Lightning cHannel, SHock, the stun, and Insta Slow - thats a hell of alot of instant cast abilities that would annihilate people

that cant' happen, it works for games like league, but for games where you can have 20+ keybinds, its unfair to the "clickers"

I am serious man! Think about it, buy your own custom lighsaber hilts, costumes from the movies or get your own kind of custom that NOBODY has? Kinda like they did for other MMO games. I meant no flame here but look at Star Trek. They have TONS of uniform designs and custom team logos you can create. I wanna see that. Oh not to mention how annoying we all have the same Starship in SWTOR. Don't you get bored of flying the same ship? I know SWTOR only came out recently and i know we'll get more updates. No...I mean, current ability delay won't exist.


For example, if I use project, because of the animation, it takes about, .4/.5 seconds to actually effect my target ~ That's a big deal. Half the time my project hits POST death, still causes a hit on the GCD but, my damage was/is NOT actually recorded.

Come 1.2, that issue, won't exist anymore.

That's what ability delay is...and it has nothing to do with the GCD ~ That will exist, period.

Do you mean like when you use "Overload" and you jump, do a flip and then it AOE knockbacks? this will knock back right as you hit your button? or am I misunderstanding?

hmm i dont seem to have an issue with animation forcing me to not get my hits in, infact, if I do the 2 Second Lightning Bolt and quickly follow up with the Channeled Lightning attack, the Animation has not stopped for the first attack, and my Channeled ability has already started and ticking damage even though I do not see the Lightning Stream.

So I must be thinking of something else cus I dont seem to see any issue like that

No. Marksman is your best bet for Burst DMG. In fact, Burst is the complete opposite of DOTS; "burst" = lots of damage upfront and a shorter amount of time. Great for PvE where enemies don't actively take cover to stay out of your line of sight, and you can sit in cover. Snipe and Ambush require activation time, and Series of Shots is channeled over 1.5s, 2.5s, and 3s respectfully. That means, if you can't get a shot(s) off in that time, Ambush and Snipe don't do anything, and your Series of Shots isn't maximized. In WZs and Ilum, there's various obstacles, and mobile human enemies. Thankfully, while you can only activate a rifle ability within 35m, the actual range is 40m, giving you a bit of wiggle room. But the second they briefly run behind a pillar, the ability activation/channeling is canceled, and you have wasted precious seconds doing NOTHING. In addition, you need to be in cover to use Marksmen abilities. This limits your mobility severely, and, as you may have realized, mobility is IMPORTANT in PvP of any type.

DOTS, on the other hand has the advantage of "sticking" to the enemy and slowly damaging the enemy by incremental ticks. This means that, while not doing the damage all in one hit, it ticks away wherever your target goes. Behind pillars, out of range, within range, after you die, on another planet, etc. The total damage stated on the ability will be dealt in full, unless your opponent dies, obviously.

AoE, or "Area of Effect" is simply area attacks that damage more than one player within a radius. My frag grenade does a max of 900 damage (~1800 crit) per enemy within a 5 meter radius of my target. In WZs, and less so Ilum, people bunch together. Be it around doors in Voidstar, terminals in the Alderaan Civil War, or Huttball Carriers in Huttball. Bunch 2-6 people, and that's 1800-5400 damage in ONE HIT. Each player isn't hit for more than 1800 at most, but a group of people with each a 10-25% chunk of their health missing are dead men walking.

In 1v1 situations, a Marksman specced Sniper will usually win over a Engi/Leth Sniper. But, 1v1's aren't common outside of Ilum.

I'd use a Marksmen build until level 43ish, and then change to Engi/Leth. An Engi/Leth is good in PvE, but a Marksman is the best DPS in PvE. Period. No other class can deal the burst 1v1 damage a Marksman can.

Inqs do not have the problem with it as consulars do.
just because you don't see it does not mean it is not a problem.

this is exactly why they are fixing it... you have an unbalanced character compared to your mirror class.
