The most most successful MMORPG on the planet in history with well over 12 million players worldwide and 4 expansion(not all well received) and you are asking if people still play?
I still play. I have played since Vanilla. It has improved overall gameplay wise(IMO). Yes they have done some stupid things. Nerfed various classes. Screwed crap up here and there. Made it a really long grindfest. But the sheer magnitude of the game, the amount of players and all their individual wants, more race and class choices than any other game, PVP and PVE gameplay, social aspect, and numerous other points still make it the MMO Powerhouse still to this day. Anyone out there saying that their MMO is going to be a WoW killer has a HUGE feat ahead of them to do that. Rift, SWTOR, and GW2 were all touted as this. I played Rift and SWTOR. Both are excellent games. And yet I do not see them "killing" WoW. Yet I log on every day to my WoW and there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people on my server. Stormwind on a weekend looks like New York City in rush hour. The only way that any MMORPG will kill WoW is when the support for WoW has finally ended.
And the real game does not actually even really start until you hit level 85-90. The numbers of Dungeons, raids, PVP, Scenarios, Acheivements, etc is mind boggling. I am level 90 and right now I am going back to do quest lines that I was not able to get to before. And thats with just one faction! Switch sides and do it again!!!
The fact is that yes the Graphical qualities of the game are lacking compared to the newest releases. But Graphics is not all that keeps people playing. Should WoW have gone F2P? I do not feel that they have. After all its still bringing in new players. And it is still turning a HUGE profit why cut off the flow of cash?
