Server help?

Thread Starter
Alright, instead of using Windows XP Professional SP3 64bit, I've decided to migrate to a linux based server platform.

My friend uses Ubuntu as his, so I figured why not give it a shot.

I've installed everything just fine, I'm using a LAMP stack. Which is Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP, for those of you that are unfamiliar with that term.

For FTP I'm using PureFTPd, and I've installed it with the terminal, and since adding and configuring with the terminal is such a hassle, I've begun using Pure ADMIN as a GUI client for it. It works fine as well.

I've created two accounts, both in the same group with same user permissions, administrator level. One is placed in /var/www/ for my web pages, and the other is placed in a document area so I may upload my documents for back up.

Problem #1: The account tied into var/www/ can connect just fine, but I cannot upload to that destination. This is problematic as that's where my web pages are hosted. Any solution to this?

Problem #2: My personal account which I will upload files and other back up documents cannot connect to the server. It has the same administrator level privileges as the other account, and when trying to connect, I'm greeted with: ERROR #530: I don't trust you.

Problem #3: I need a VNC server with a GUI or something, if not, it'd be great if you could point me the right direction to one with instructions.

Thanks!

How can I do that? It doesn't look like the PureADMIN GUI will do that, it looks like that's just for managing users and viewing the upload/download.

What console commands would I be using?

whoops meant chgrp

chgrp

chown also works

chown

you said you are running ubuntu?

you could do it with nautilus as well (gnomes default filemanager)

in terminal:

sudo nautilus

nav your way to /var/www, right click on the folder and go to properties, then permissions, and change the group and owner to what you need it to be.

I'll be sure to try this tomorrow, but for #2, the account can't even connect to the server, the server rejects it saying "ERROR #530: I don't trust you."
