HTPC/Server/Wireless Access Point

Thread Starter
Ok. I need some help with this one.

Basically I want to make a small HTPC for the TV to save me plugging my laptop in (which struggles to playback 1080) I would also like to be able to store files on this machine making it kind of like a server. However I think I need a new router to do this.

I was looking at Zotacs Atom/ION motherboards as a low power HTPC/server but I really don't know what I need to do this.

Thanks.

Build an AMD E-350 For an HTPC / server. Much cheaper and better performance than an atom. Also what router do you have 54mbps wouldn't be terrible.

Current router is This

I don't know how I'd set up file sharing over wireless.

I have no experience with AMD so can you recommend a motherboard? I was looking to make this as small as possible.

Yeah, I did above, or if you want mini ITX... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131698

Your router is fine it will run at 54mbps lan, and you would set up file sharing through windows by creating a homegroup.

Ok.

I've been looking into this more. Could I create a permanent wireless Ad Hoc network from the HTPC allowing the other computers to connect to the internet through it?

although Win7 seems to want me to use WPA2 and I can't seem to connect from my XP laptop...

I wouldn't use Newegg, seeing as you're in England and they don't ship there.
I'm not sure about that APU, but something along the lines of the Intel DH61AG TmITX motherboard + a Pentium G/i3 would suffice for 1080p bluray playback. You can pick up a DH61AG + Pentium for about £160.
