[TH] Tom's CPU Architecture Shootout: 16 CPUs, One Core Each, And 3 GHz - Page 7

How big (physically) is each of these cores & what was the energy consumption. Cores themselves means very little.

Core physical size doesn't really matter.... what it can do is more important than how big it is. (LOL.... )

You can't accurately measure the single-core energy consumption of a multi-core and multi-function CPU. You have to account for the cache, memory controller, IGP, PCIe controller, etc which will skew any results.

i.e. Is it fair to compare a SB with a PCIe controller vs a Phenom II without one?
Once again...

AMD is selling because at lower price points, they make a superior product. The Neo is far better and more usable than the Atom, and the Athlon II blows the doors off of garbage like the duo-Pentium.

Not only that, but AMD doesn't force integrated graphics down everyone's throat - because nothing is worse than Intel's GMA garbage. Even the weakest AMD APU, running on the weakest processor, blows the doors off of sluggish, shared memory Intel offerings - that are embarrassingly weak.

Intel needs the competition, because they have been lax themselves, content with offering obsolescence like the i3/i5/i7 stuff when people want real improvements, like the i9 and i11 - which would be really Extreme, and not just some marketing ballyhoo like their Extreme i7 weakness.
Maybe you should shoot Tom's an email and ask them to write an article for your country

1. The graphics card is the exact same in all tests (HD 5850)... since when did CPU make a huge difference here
2. Old K8 architecture is defeating K10 by 2x!? (K8 doesn't have L3 cache either!)

Seems like bollocks to me!
While most games won't scale that much, that's 3D11. Any card will be bottlenecked significantly if running on an AMD system in any of Futuremark's benchmarks (yes, even the GPU score). While most say this is "Intel bias," the goal of a benchmark is to take minute differences and blow them up to large proportions so there is a significant variance in scores. This small trend in games then becomes a large difference in competitive benchmarks.

I wasn't looking at the AMD vs Intel scores, I was looking at the AMD K8 vs AMD K10 GPU scores...
K8 90nm > K10 45nm!? Nonsense!?

Seems like AMD's method of adding more cores and tweaking the architecture is taking them backwards, or the test is screwed up.

The price/performance was in AMD's favor until Sandy Bridge was released, that changed everything.

but in the low end AMD is still king......

The Athlon II X2 250 is on par with the more expensive Core 2 Duo e7200

The Athlon X3 is much better than the Sandy Bridge Pentium Dual Core that just came out and even though they are the same price.

The Athlon X4 is still a better option to me over the Core 2 Duo. it can also compete with the 1st gen i3

The Phenom X4 isn't as good as the 1st gen i7, but its still cheaper to get a Phenom setup going over x58. The Phenom X4 is also better than almost every Core 2 Quad and much cheaper.

Sandy Bridge destroys Thuban and beats up on Gulftown. The end.

What I'm really wondering, is how they got a 980x to run single core single thread without killing it...

IF your cpu sucks under LN2 or so, an EASY way to kill it is the following:

Power up you mobo (it doesn't matter what mobo you have)
Go into cpu features
Disable Hyper Threading.
Select 2 Cores for slow die
OR
Select 1 Core for FAST die
Save and exit and.........you're ready - No overclock no nothing -

Here's my story:
I had a decent i7 980 Cpu, benching Vantage ~5900MHz
I putted on the GIGABYTE UD7 mobo
I was playing OK UNTIL I tested the Super-Pi 1M
Disable HT
Test 1M
Disable 4 cores and I left only the 2 of them
Playing 1M OK
Playing and fooling around with 2 cores for a couple of sessions
OK
ENABLE ALL cores and HT
NO Windows at 5800MHz which was EASY before
NO Windows at 5600MHz
NO Windows at 5400MHz
NO Windows at 4000MHz
Booted into Windows with full cores and HT at DEFAULTS = NO GO

I said f(l)uck!...The cpu degraded THAT FAST....

NO

Another Cpu on EVGA
Decent one too

Playing, testing it and fooling around with full cores and HT and LN2 = OK
Next day I had no LN2 to play with so I did some testing on air with DEFAULT EVERYTHING
Testing Super-Pi with 2 cores = OK
I then go into bios and pick ONLY ONE CPU Core with No HT.
Save and exit.
Boots and freezes
Pressing Reset
NO BOOT

CPU = DEAD!....

I then call to a friend of mine who is on air and he doesn't Overclock at all.
I go to him
Get into bios and disable HT and pick one core
Did you do it?
Yes?
OK - Now save and exit -
OK

........

........

George it doesn't booting!....

I go - clear c-mos and retry.

George no go, what happened? you killed my cpu?

Am I at your home? How could I kill your cpu?.....
