Thread Starter
Any suggestions for good mobo for i7 980?
at least 4 SATA 600 ports. Good and stable for overclocking in the future.

EDIT:

Actually it is so:
I had two configurations
an i7 2600k
or an i7 980

i decide to go for the i7 980.

would be better go for the i7 2600k with a good motherboard that support 4 sata 600 ports?

The ASUS Rampage III Black Edition was made for 980x/990x overclocking but only has 2 sata 6gbs headers, The Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 is the only with 4 sata 3 headers and good for overclocking.

EVGA Classified 3 IMO would be your best option.

Have a boatload of them at work and have yet to have a single issue.

The warranty is bank, too.

well the most important is the sata 600, i have 3x seagate barracuda XT 2TB 7200rpm 64MB sata 600 drives and 1x Intel SSD 510 Series 250GB so i need these ports.

edit: one thing i forgot any knows a good cpu cooler for 980 that's quiet? and still can overclock?

The problem is the SATA 6 GB/s ports on x58 boards are useless. Aren't they always the Marvel controller? It's a piece of junk if so, you're better off using the Intel SATA 3 GB/s ports. AFAIK for proper SATA 6 GB/s support you need the Intel controller which can only be found on 1155 boards.

For a quiet but great cooler you really can not beat the NH-D14 with its <1300rpm fans.

It really depends what you intend to use the rig for. If you can make decent use of 6 cores/12 threads then the 980 may well be the best bet - that is of course assuming losing SATA 6 GB/s isn't a deal breaker for you. Again whether it is or not is entirely dependent on what you are doing with it.

Personally I frequently make use of all 12 threads and don't really care about large scale data-drive access speeds so the 980X wins out vs a 2600K for me. I think for regular home use and gaming a 1155 rig is probably better value and comes with quality SATA 6 GB/s ports. Perhaps even consdier a 2500K for that type of use.
