PC to NAS/ Server

Thread Starter
I was recently given a PC that is about 3-4 years old with a corrupt version of Windows XP. I am hoping to pack this computer with external and internal HDDs and be able to access it from other computers on my router. I was wondering if converting it into a NAS or server would be better for this, and if there was an OS that is perfect for doing this?

FreeNAS as suggested above, is a nice quick and easy way to setup a NAS

You can also use any flavor of linux to make a server box, or you can use WHS and if a student you can get Windows Server 2008R2 for free but it's way more than you need for a nas box.

I'd agree with everyone about freenas, but I'd check out the different versions to find the features you need.

Right now I'm using version 8 at work to store backups but from what I've checked out it doesn't have the same UPNP capabilities that version 7 had.

Play around and find something you like.
