Ok. I would like to make a server which I can access over my wireless connection.

Can someone tell me how to do this?

A server for what...access via your wireless network?

Assuming you have a wireless network make sure said computer has a wireless card and network connectivity and then you'll have access.

What do you want your server to do?

Basically I want it to be a file store/backup.

But I would also like it to be a HTPC for the TV which it will sit under.

I currently have a wireless router which gives internet access to the whole house. I can't access any other computer through it though.

Have you properly setup file-sharing on your computers? On Windows 7, you can turn on the homegroup feature and see if you are able to access files. Can you ping computers on your network?

As for the server, you can build a computer out of old parts, install linux or windows and then share the drives. Windows Home Server is a popular choice but if you want as a htpc also (which I don't suggest, always best to separate server from htpc) maybe just use Windows 7 with folder sharing.

This is a future project so nothing has been done yet. The problem only 1 PC of the 3 currently in the house runs Windows 7.

I just want to know if the plans possible. Also its not like the server will be heavily used.

Tbh I've not tried pinging other computers on the network.I'll have to try it.

EDIT: ok I just tried pinging other IP addresses that are on the same wireless as me and have 100% package loss...

You are going to have problems trying to stream video over 802.11G if it is high-def recordings. If you do get normal 480 streams working, you will kill it when you try to copy anything to the server.

The best theoretical throughput you will get is 24 Mbits with 802.11G.

I don't plan on streaming media.

Honestly you might want to consider wiring it up. Transfer o er even 2.4 ghz n is only good for 4.5-5 MB/sec for windows shares vs over 100 for Gigabit

I can't imagine copying the amount of data I do to my server over wireless. If I am not hitting 70 to 100 MB, I am not happy.
